Was making a deeper look into my 3 melon plants and found a really nice full perfect formed long melon out 10' on a secondary which is about 8' out on a main. This melon is out growing my dedicated melon that is 12' out on a main on the same plant. I also culled 4 other same size deformed growing melons & dozen or so 2"-5"er's. Am I crazy considering keeping the melon on the secondary that is much bigger and appears more aggressive? Time of course is my enemy with decisions on this.

Title with 'Faster' is a bit incorrect. 'Better' vs a disadvantage trying to grow on a melon on a secondary vine.

I’ve always tried to set and grow on a main or finger vine.
Have always had a bigger fruit.
Having said that,my 180 was grown on a secondary when I had nothing else.
I cut the finger vine off at that secondary and let it become the new finger vine.

I kinda got in a panic wanting advice on this by other growers, Thanks for your input..I did just that, rolled the dice & cut the main to create a new one with this bigger growing melon. I still welcome any other input on this. Thanks again!

Something to think about for future reference
Your “keeper” melon I am going to assume is older, because you had already decided to keep it. Melons have a super fast growth stage early on, doubling and even tripling in size before they settle in to start growing at a nice steady pace. So...
You have a melon outgrowing your keeper plus
4 other same size deformed melons plus
A dozen or so 2-5” melons.
All on the same plant you that you have already picked your “keeper”
This is most likely why your keeper is not growing as fast as you want.

My #2 plant that has Mr. Hankey has a side vine that the melon is growing out on, approx 15 ft out. I've notice without terminating the vine past the melon the vine has tripled in circ maybe due to supporting the melon.
