Most people have good luck with Rampart from Takii seeds. Others have done well with regular bottle, bushel, or long gourd seeds. Any lagenaria seems to do well.

I was just messing with ya Tony! I have used rampart and bushel gourd. Bushel gourd is fairly easy to get ahold of, rampart not so much. Im gonna probably use both this year but will probably use more bushel gourd.

If I do try a graft it will be bushel gourd.
Tried fig leaf gourd for experimenting.
I’m told it is not good for the long run.

I’ve only got room for one plant.
If it’s a graft, and goes down early I’m done for the year.

I went to Takii Seeds, the only rootstock for watermelon was:

Just is a rootstock for watermelon. Crop category of Just is Squash. Medium-strong plant vigor with good growth under ideal temperatures. Thick stem makes grafting easier. Sow the seeds 2 to 5 days earlier than watermelon seeds to match the thickness of hypocotyl.

Anyone know much about it?

thats a interspecies squash (Cucurbita maxima × Cucurbita moschata). Same as the one we tried in the past like the shin tosa

It's tricky. Here is the U.S. distributor for Takii. You must email them with the specific request. They will be able to get you 1000 seeds for about $80.

Or you could find a source of the above mentioned gourds. They are all about genetically identical with these rootstocks. You can tell a lagenaria seed by its goofy ears.

I'm going to try grating as a side experiment this year. Love science so why not. But I'm trying the root stock from my giant pumpkin(800+) to scion of a Carolina cross. Love to try new things and if it takes great... If not,, back to the drawing board lol. I'm still creating a dark healing room with a humidifier plumbed in.
