When applying to the patch should it be fresh or composted

You CAN apply it and till it in before winter - 6 months in-ground is recommended at least before you plant anything. I Googled it and it confirmed what I would do, and worms would enjoy, lol. Doing that now and sampling in spring to address needed amendments is my recommendation, regardless my PB, lol. eric g PS---I also strongly suggest you have Mycorrhizae to till in at at least 3 lb or MORE per 1,000 SF of patch; I have not, in years, butt I know it's still there, living on my weeds' roots, lol. I have about 5 pounds left to use for experiments and for SOME of the spring sprouting. I gotta get MORE! You can NOT add too much Mycorrhizae. Period. (Moar-Cor-Rhizae, lol); PS---Mycorrhizae MUST have host roots to live on, so, a cover crop that is alive or recently-terminated will harbor the Myco---Plain soil has no true home for it and it then doesn't last long. Good Luck! eg

Also helps with chapped lips...doesn't do much for the cracking but sure as heck keeps ya from licking them .

I don’t have cover crop so I think it makes more sense to just do at vine burials and planting

Sure, the minimalist approach always works, too. Maybe. Butt, then, what about forgotten vines that have roots in an area with no Myco? You might as well skip it entirely. I wonder what Ron Wallace does. You would and will take his advice, I'll bet. See, tilling it into the soil and growing then a cover crop of, in MY case, Dutch White Clover (Perennial RyeGrass and Annual RyeGrass, though, in '26 - Still too TALL!), enables there to be a Mycorrhizal network that is patch-wide and ready to take on the AG's roots, instantly, so to speak; It'd be like getting to a party JUST as your favorite song comes on and...well, things would be already in full swing, lol. I was just now re-kindling my need for DWC (Dutch White Clover) and I know of the best price, and it IS expensive ($194.08 USD or so for 50 lbs), butt not as bad as I had remembered. It's a llllonnngg way to Spring! eg

Steve and Jake! lol
Most of the big guys aren't using cow manure anymore for many reasons. AI will tell you what most are using now. There's many good organic composts out there, you're just going to pay a bit more.
