What makes them abort? How can I prevent this?

My understanding of it is that the plants need to be large enough and healthy enough to maintain large healthy roots, sufficient nutrients, plus a favorable environment (weather and whatever else). I say whatever else because I feel like even the top growers cant give a 100% guarantee that their pumpkin will not abort. For them it might be the timing of watering, nutrient ratios, etc. It's useful to have multiple plants (as you did) and then try different methods on each plant. Surely there is a method that will work for you.

We ALL spend a lot of time thinking about what we will do differently next year. It sounds like you are beginning to think about things you might try differently next year?

Agree with Ketchup. Plant needs to be bigger and roots established. Start earlier next year.

Other possibility is a sterile plant, but I have only encountered that twice in 16 years.

I has a sterile plant last year and I 5gink this aborting is down to nutrient deficiency/imbalance note the split. I sent a soil test earlier today and I’ll ge5 my results in a week
