I read with interest the 'no dig' article in the newsletter, all very well if you pay just $10 a yard! Is that for real?

Over here's it's more like $200.

It really depends who you source it from. Buying compost or topsoil blends from a landscaping company will go for about $15 to $75 per yard in my area, depending on the product (e.g. plain compost is less than a topsoil blend). Delivery costs may set you back more than the compost itself.

Around here, You can often get it from landscapers pretty cheap as it is a by product of leaf clean up. I paid just $20 a yard for some last fall. Which I thought was a really good deal. .

Depends on the type, but a nicely aged black gold is $25-$35 a yard here.

Depends on what your looking for? If your building tilth and just want to improve your soil then any old well composted material works. If your targeting specific ammendments we look for organic sites like this www.marleywormgrowers.com Considerably more money per yard but IMHO well worth it! We base all additions to our patch on soil sample analysis. Once it gets roughed in (pH, OM, macro / micro nutes etc).

Getting excited about spring despite the 6" of snow we got yesterday and the low teen temps!

Gerald, I get it straight from the company that makes it. They usually sell it per lorry full to crop farmers but private growers can pick it up for 10 euros per cubic metre.

It is most economical to obtain compost from the company that makes it but check around. The larger companies screen their compost and will even have an independent lab analysis of their product.
I am speaking from the hard knocks viewpoint. The place where I had been getting compost didn’t screen it and I have been picking hundreds of stones out of my patches, some grapefruit sized.
