Hi everyone. What are your thoughts on growing on a secondary vine. I have a female flower about to open. The problem is that it's only about 3 feet from the stump end.

Most people prefer the main but

this proved it is possible if soil is right.

it'd be funny if the pumpkin got so big that the 3-ft. vine going to it was straight up - eg

How far out on the secondary is it? Seems close. How long is your main? Any farther out that will be opening in the next 10 days or so? I know it is getting late for you guys in Calgary.

I've grown several very close to the stump on secondaries ( 4-7') with late pollinations and usually end up with kins in the 300-500 lb range. Had a 500 lber my first year with a June 1st germination and a july 21st pollination. You can keep it for now and cull it later if you get another set.

Thanks guys. My female is only 3-4 feet out on the secondary. I do have one on the main that looks like it will open in the next few days.

Imagine this though - the shortest distance from point A to point Pumpkin...is the nearest one available. hmmm... my 2003 Haist had a female that i missed by a few days - on about an 8-inch tertiary(!) - here's just a (leaf?) stalk, and a little, round, expired pumpkin on it. as always, hmmmm...eg

Pollination question. How long after pollinating will I see that it worked? Also how much pollen do I use? 1 male or a few...

You should know within about two or three days whether the pollination took or not. If the fruit is bigger and still shiny the pollination took. I use as many males as I have sometimes two or three sometimes six or seven.
