Now that we are in the middle of Juneuary, I am wondering about pollination dates. If we go too soon, it will be too cool for a large portion of the time for maximum pumpkin growth. I've generally pollinated anything I can get on the main vine, but this year I may have one ready to go late this week. Our temps here have been in the upper 50s and lower 60s during the day, lower 50s at night.

Do the NW growers think this is too soon? Would you shoot for late June or even early July?

I think you should wait til August to pollinate ;)

I have already pollinated my first but that is for the Puyallup Fair so I went early intentionally. I personally have never been able to get a pumpkin to keep growing after about 90 days so I am trying to time my pollinations to weigh offs accordingly. Sometimes you just have to take whatever you can get though. Looks like I am probably going to be pollinating my pumpkin for Christiansons early next week. If I had the space I would probably let it go another week but that is not an option.

We pollinate everything on the main and decide which to keep as time goes on. Ideally the plant is 75% grown out and the pollinations are around 12' out or more. We shootfor mid to late june for pollination with July 10th being the latest pollination date to get a serious contender to the show.

Kind regards

We shoot for last week of June to the first week of July and like Gad’s said, hopefully no later than July 10th.

Congrats Captain 97 thats an achievement. I may pollinate one in a week or so, probably more like 10 days because Junuary is going to keep things at a slow pace for one more week. I may skip that bloom and go for one farther out if the fair gets cancelled.

Hang in thete Glen, Spokane County Fair was just cancelled due to this darn cronie virus so no weighoffs for growers here on the eastside this year..
