I have been growing for 10 years and have never had this happen. The vines are splitting themselves open parallel to the direction of growth and just sort of flaying open from node to node. the attached photo is on the main vine. I also have about 10 side vines on the same plant that did the same thing at various points. Its not at every node just every once in a while. My other two plants are fine. Any opinions on what is causing this? Genetics, Nutritional, or Disease? Also any thoughts on how this may affect Pumpkin growth? It seems like the nutrients should still be able to flow through the tissues as long as I keep decay out.

It was extremely aggressive with the plant nearly filling the whole space by early july. I also stem split my other pumpkin in mid july but its vines were ok. I thought it was a mix of genetics, warm weather and too much N.

It should be fine, just dont bury those sections. I found the vines were splitting on the 1872 after i dug them up as i couldnt get a pumpkin to set and found rot had already set in and i lost about 3/4 of the plant. The rest of it still grew a 500#er shown in the diary.

Keep those splits clean and dry, they will be fine.

My 1911 did that in a couple spots this year, my belief, based purely on nothing, is aggressive growth plays a role in it.

On another note, that's some very nice root development there!
