What should I be looking for max temp in my green house before I kill my kins? I live in the Adirondacks in upstate NY and temps here are colder than most areas. They might need to live in there for awhile. I'm retired and can check temps often. Small greenhouse made out of double pane sliding glass doors.Pic in my diary.

I should have added...This greenhouse is only 3' tall so height will not be an issue.Only one level.

Anything above 85 is warmer than they like. They burn up bad around 120 degrees. The small greenhouses will heat up into the 120's quickly when full sun comes out so you have to open them up with any full sun. I like to say you can only kill the plant once so you have to be real close and paying attention in case a cloudy day clears out. Safer to open them up by 9;00 am when its not snowing :)

Thanks Cojoe. Still in the 30s when I finished my greenhouse at 10am. Still in the 30s when I checked temp at noon. Only 2 hours and was already at 82. I still have some snowbanks kicking around. Way ahead of last year though. Just wasn't ready to cook my kins just yet.

I am sure that you greenhouse is not near the house, but I use a remote thermometer that claims to have a 350 ft range for about $40. Plus, it keeps track of the daily highs and lows. You will be amazed at how fast they can get to 100 degrees. I really like what Joe said about only killing them once. I think I will steal that line.

A taller greenhouse gives somewhere for the heat to go. I would recommend a shade for most of the day. The other way is a more teepee shape greenhouse with a hole for the hot air to exit.

Why not try an automatic opener that works by temperature. Remember when you set it up , the temperature down by your plants is what counts. Maybe somebody that uses one will chime in.

A bunch of years ago i left hoop house closed because it was only going to be 50 outside but came home from work and plant was toast, it got to 125 inside so be careful. I would use a portable GFCI with a heater just in case, I use chick lights for a little heat.

I still use a small coldframe like the one you built. I vent it daily, because I don't want to take the chance. even if that means only venting it with a 1-2" opening on a very cold windy day. ( the sun is very strong even if the air temp doesn't reflect that fact.) If you have a little heat tape in their to keep the soil warm, that will really help. Warm roots and cool tops grow nice bushy compact plants. Once the weather warms the plants will stretch out and the plant will take off.

Cojoe you hit it right on the head with 9am. 24 degrees this morning at 7:30 ..40 inside greenhouse...9am 36 degrees..80 inside greenhouse. Fresh snow hadn't melted yet so the double pane doors are working.
