I need help. I can’t figure out what my five plants have and have posted pics plus Western test results in my grower diary. I’m hoping the seasoned and experienced growers can help me.

does look like virus...my guess is bacterial or severe ph fluctuation at one of the feedings...good one for the mad scientist to look at...hopefully grows out of it...all plants affected evenly?

Prob. mosaic virus or 2-4 D drift. Mosaic will spread across the plant in the new growth over a few days .Herbicide damage will show up suddenly.

All five have it family even but 1 of the five is more affected than the other 4

I would say virus for sure. But the fact that all five have it seems to point to herbicide drift. Did all the plants exhibit symptoms around the same time or did it slowly move around through your plants?

The pasture next to my patches was sprayed (not by me) with Pasture Pro herbicide on July 7th. Person who sprayed said there was no wind. Plants started showing signs of problems July 17th, they seem evenly affected and didn’t spread plant to plant. New growth stunted and new leaves were the ones most affected. If if was 24D drift, I would have thought it would outgrow the damage which isn’t happening.

My guess is now herbicide damage-mosaic wont do that yellowing of existing leaves it grows in leaves as theyre doing cell division .

Based on what you are telling us I agree with Cojoe I am pretty certain you are dealing with herbicide damage. It takes a while for the plant to outgrow all the toxin that is in it's system. It may take some time yet. The fact that your plants are even alive shows that they got a very small dose, however they are very sensitive and the only way to get it out of it's system is to keep growing. As the plant is recovering the new growth will begin to resume a normal look. In the meantime try to encourage lots of growth from all the vine tips. I would even encourage tertiaries. At this point, all growth is good and will help you in your cause. I am sorry this happened to you. This is very frustrating.

Every pollination I have done has aborted after a few days. Females look changed and don’t open as fast and hard as normal. Wonder if spray drift 34 days ago would still be causing this?

Don, i’m very careful not to mix in old sprayers. I keep 6-8 one gallon sprayers each labeled for each thing I spray and that’s the only thing that goes in there.

The spray itself didn't need to drift. If it was warm enough, it can volatilize for days after application, and affect a decent radius. I'd absolutely put my money on that scenario. I wouldn't count on it outgrowing it either, unfortunately.

Is there a way to verify spray drift is what it is? Western doesn’t test for herbicide.....

Pasture Pro is 2,4-D. I would think there's some lab out there, but tests like that would probably cost a bit.

Are there any other plants at a similar distance from the spray that are also showing damage besides the pumpkins? That would really tell you it was the spay not a virus. Save some money. Anyhow... Maybe some research would dig up the best 'antidote' but there may be none. But yeah getting a test done may be the only way to get your neighbor to admit fault and then hopefully not do it again.

2,4-D is highly volatile and so is triclopyr. Glyphosate round up is not.

My neighber and I have had repeated problem with a farmer spraying 2,4D .You can get your leaves tested but its best to have it done as soon as you see damage. Making a report to the EPA will get you the most help if you want to protect your property.I am not against the use of herbicides but blantant misuse I am. In our last incident the winds were over 30mph when they sprayed

I say spray drift for sure. If it was a virus the affected leaves would blacken after infection. It is not Mosiac.

I agree with Big Moon and Andy. One sniff of 24d and no more pumpkin plant.

Update: my issues were spray drift from 2,4-D so if you want to see what it looks like, look at my grower diary. Many thanks to everyone who was so generous with their help, particularly Rick Jolivette who patiently helped me through it. Now trying to salvage my season..... -Craig
