My pb is 795.5. Hay bale beats this... or falls short? Closest without going over wins.

http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=301477

Myco added in soil... Diatomaceous on ground. Bale is truly disgusting strange new species of ooze... Too gross to post or even talk about...porkchop is correct.

Your turn to be correct...

Its a terrible looking plant. Its planted ontop of a round bale of hay tipped on its side into a 4 ft deep hole. Topped with dirt. Maybe slime bugs will kill the roots. You decide...
Decomposing since late December. Soil is untested, but grew two 5 lb tomatoes.

Make ye best guess!!!

i will go 805 if Brandon listens to my advice. Last year...one of my coworkers planted a plant in 100 sq ft..right in the middle of the area. He went over 500. I will have to look at what hay breaks down to...can break this down quick with the right compost tea. He is 4 ft deep...only the top 2 feet we have to worry about. A bale is not that big of a sq ft area. We have lots of soil not hay bale to think about. There are amendments....hydro specialty that can deal with root disease. Brandon...do you want the bad grower advice....if you take it...i think 805 plus...if not I will go with 0.

luke...i am great at argueing. You dont know how many employee evaluations I have had that said....i am argumentive. I always thought...what is wrong with that...when obviously the boss is wrong. Do you guys think, it is impossible...36 sq ft of questionable grow area...that might be able to corrected with azomax. leaves potentially 950 sq ft of rest of grow area to push a pumpkin over 800. Even if you lose the stump.....i think 800 is possible.

Nothing wrong with thinking outside the box and trying new ideas, but he lost me in the thread in Fertilizing and Watering especially the part on cover crops not preventing erosion so hay is the answer.

Anyway, I don’t want to hijack this anymore, good luck with this.

I am not thinking too much about it. Honestly, I think the best plan of action would be pull the plant and redo the area and start over. Still plenty of time. Disease in the current area is the biggest issue...to keep it at bay, it would take an investment in fungicides. The slime is a disease breeding ground. I am wondering if Hydroguard applied to soil would halt root rot like it does in a hydroponics setup. If can get the plant beyond the bale..then there i a chance. I do not know how much area there is to work with. If it is a 150 sq ft plant..the chance of great success is very minimal. Good luck Brandon, I know you will think of some off the wall attempt to solve the issues.

About 500 sq ft of good growing area. Glad you guys are entertained.

The internet loves hay bale gardening. I do think that owing to the size of this bale it was possibly more anaerobic than a small rectangular bale.

I didnt find any references to using a round bale in a hay bale garden... So of course I just hayd to try it!

While your trying something new and trying to reinvent the wheel. Your not thinking
ahead. If that bale is becoming anaerobic, what are the possibilities that any disease growing can spread to the rest of the patch.

good point Rick, I will private email you this weekend brandon. I think if you really want to save the bale plant that you have to be in position to spend some dollars to combat the disease. I still think your best plan of action would be to pull the plant and the bale and start fresh. But if not, since I am not growing pumpkins this year...i would have a plant to watch and think about. Look for my email.

Rick there are two possibilities for creating disease. One is to thtow thongs out of balance in a way that promotes conditions for the disease organisms already present to thrive. The other is to introduce entirely new diseases (bringing in soil from a nursery that has a bad phyto strain for example. I figure the things I can unbalance nature can rebalance the concern would be the amount of time. My honest guess is that although compost @ years 2-6 would be better than aged 2-6 months I do think disease should begin to decline now. There are pathogens unfriendly to roots out there. The balance is whats interesting. There is a tipping point where the good outweighs bad. This wont be a fairy tale but later in the year in August many growers soils may be dead (biologically used up) and you'll be depending on adding hydrolized protiens to the soil. Possibly I wont have to... The hay bale may still be alive... kicking out nutrients. I expect this setup to perform better in August than April. Lets see if thats the case.

It is a shaky thread from over a year ago. I cant say I agree with subject but a concern was brought up and I doubt anyone really spent anytime checking the rules and regulations for Wa. It is actually common in the US that to win a prize a customer is not required to make a purchase. That is why many companies offer free entry by mail to some of their promotional events. Any problem with a small specialty grow supplier was overblown. I know Bubba received much worse BP threads. Many of us have things that we wish we had not posted or posted differently. That is why I think disagreements should be held to current posts...not ones from years back.

put porkchop on ignore....get over the stress unless you want to be a high heavy hitter. 95% of the growers here, just want to grow bigger than they did before. Enjoy the time in the sun, the weeds that just don't stop, the weather that keeps doing opposite of what you want...etc, etc, etc...if the only number to beat is your previous pb...you don't have to worry that you don't have enough dollars to do what you want, you don't have the knowledge to grow your best, and many other things. Number one...enjoy the challenge, you will win some years, you will lose others. Too much stress for giant growing...you might as well be working a job...this is a hobby....find enjoyment in it.

Glenoma your right I will just block you I hope you have a successful growing season . Im here to learn, listen to, and implement suggestions from growers on how I can do better job at growing these pumpkins. I have come to the conclusion there’s not a thing you have to offer.
bnot your right as well, growing giant pumpkins is a hobby that should be enjoyed and I do so very much. I however do not agree that BP should be used as a hobby.

Hobbit, When I took a picture of you on top of you new ND record...I had my finger on the button just in case you fell off so i could catch the tumble. I think you putting Glenomkins on ignore is probably the right decision for you. I really don't think he will offer you anything that will help you reach the next level. You don't need the distraction. As far as BP...we are all in different boats. It is a hobby of many different ability of growers. Should we make it...the only ones that can post are those growers that have broke 1900, 2000, 2200 etc. Next time I see you Hobbit...i expect to like the conversation..you did good for an old guy jumping in to help at the Anoka weighoff. I will probably be a forever small grower...i can listen to everyone. I don't think any heavy hitter is now listening to the advice of Glenomkiins.

+1 for the ignore feature. I've only got one name on it but it makes a world of difference for your stress level. It's almost May, let's get growing!

Good idea Hobbit, I’ve got a few growers and non-growers her on block but every once in awhile someone will email me with “you see what (insert name here) is posting on the message boards today” so I’ll sign out and follow the action for shits and giggles.

You just can’t make this stuff up, cracks me up big time!!
