Does anyone have an opinion on how far to let the secondary vines grow before you clip them? I'm trying to plan for how much space I need for the plant.

Most growers do between 12 and 16 feet.

I know a couple growers that grow them 30 feet on each side and do very well. Many fruit over 2000 pounds.

That being said, there’s so many ways to grow these things .

I grow my 3 secondary vines directly behind the fruit 20 feet on each side and wrap them around the front of the patch. These are the secondary vines I treat like gold and have gotten longer growth out of the fruit later in the season.

here, try this this year: on just a couple of vines as a test, instead of bending and turning those vines and with no benefit otherwise than i think it's pretty neat and may avoid the vines kinking from the bends:

at NEARLY the end of a vine you are about to turn tip-of-plantward, cut the vine OFF just past the last leaf you wanna keep, being SURE to keep the last TERTIARY vine bud available, and bury any and all nodes up to that point anyway - what i've seen happen is that tertiary bud assembly takes all the juice that was gonna go into the secondary and it will now go into the tertiary, taking over as that same secondary.

same thing you would do if your main vine snapped off, but no doctor required, lol---you may be able to grow a secondary right up to the edge, then, right-angle it, in other words---eg

I have a space that is 40 ft by 100 ft so this helps. Sounds like the length of the secondary vines come with various opinions. I should be able to grow at least 3 pumpkins in that space I think though.
