In the recent SNGPG newsletter Steve Geddes mentioned using Florel on his plant. Is anyone else using this hormone? Just curious as to why you would use it on a giant pumpkin? When would you apply it?

This is a plant growth regulator/fruit inhibitor. We use it at our work to prevent trees from setting fruit on them.

Very, very limited use. Steve C. asked me in the interview if I used Matt DeBacco's anthesis and I explained that I used ethylene (Florel) at 100 ppm 48 hours after pollination. Application was the same as Matt's anthesis. Would not suggest using it at any other rate or time on a pumpkin.

Thanks for the information. I would imagine you would have to be very careful with Florel. (as with any hormone) One thing that stood out to me from the last SNGPG newsletter is that there is no single silver bullet method or technique. Each grower has their own unique process and methods. Good growers have good horticultural instincts but perhaps more importantly they are not afraid of investing their time and money with no guarantees of success. They are not afraid of hard work and not afraid to fail!

Steve, did you just apply it to the fruit or to the entire plant in a spray or drench?

48 hours after pollination I use a small paint brush to apply the 100 ppm solution "only" to the fruit. You could also use a small spray bottle to apply. Do a search for Anthesis and you will find Matt's suggestions on how to apply and the theory/research behind it.
