We know that at peak growth a crop like corn uses 0.33" of water per day. What would be the best estimate of the amount of water a mature pumpkin plant with a growing fruit uses? 900 square ft. plants.
Thank you for you thoughts.

That's a tough one and look forward to hearing others take on this one. I'm at 90 gallons plus per 1100 sq ft right now but looks like I need to bump that up here soon.
I know a few of the guys that are at 150 to 175 gallons a day per 1000 sq ft.
I guess it just all depends on how well your soil drains, temps, ext.

I know that the variables are in great numbers. Just didn't know what it worked out to. 0.33" on 1000 square ft. is around 205 gallons per day. I can imagine between plant and fruit growth we are using at least that much if not more. That is not accounting for evaporation either. I am at 120 right now, going to bump it up and see how the plants react.

My soil holds water fairly well. If I water too much I get disease problems. I had to water while they were in the hoop houses, buy since the first of June we had so much rain I didn't water a drop. Now its getting dry so tomorrow I start watering. Sprinkle cold water from the hose in the morning and let a 35 gallon garbage can of water heat up during the day. That can gets split up as a drench for 3 plants, with an evening drench every other day. I found cold water in the evening slows growth over night, but in the morning its no problem.

1 spot 70gallon makes it happy another spot 150 and i could still water some likely and not be over watering
that will give you a solid range

75 gallons per plant, every second day maximum. Our soil is very silty, and holds water well under the canopy of leaves. Outside the canopy, dry as a popcorn fart.

Drip versus over head will play into that as well I would imagine due to evaporation. I would be interested to know how much people use in the different systems if that made a difference.
