Looking for a little advice. I grow my pumpkins on plywood with mill fabric underneath. I put 2-3 inches of sand on top of the mill cloth. I am wondering if I am over doing it with the sand given that I have the mill cloth down. thanks, Kathy

as long as the order is plywood/fabric/sand/pumpkin (bottom-to-top), sounds like the right combination to ME, although i do something different. eg

Your good the layer of sand lets the pumpkin expand friction free. Also keep sand in contact with the bottom of the pumpkin all the way around and you wont have mice living undernezath it.

as i was researching to find any pics or postings about this seemingly cut-and-dried topic, i found it to be impossible to find ALL THREE (plywood + mill fabric + sand) in ANYone's regimen(s)...0, 1 or 2 of 3 but not all. i searched 'sand on top' and probably 'growing on plywood' (one result, and it was favorable to plywood)... this is a link to one with mill fabric AND sand...i think plywood would have been perfect at the bottom of it all---good luck!

I have learned that the board and mill fabric still cause the kins underside to grow concave (last year). I even (tried) to rock my kin daily. I drilled holes in the plywood for extra drainage. Looks like sand is a must have.
