This year..my pumpkin starts were mid May. I am wondering what is the latest the experienced growers have ever started and what weight you have grown to. Is there still hope for any grower that might start this weekend?

I hit 1033.5 on a mid July pollination, still growing good in late Sept, even with main vine terminated foot past stem

I got a 97 pound one with just 10 leaves and a pollination on August 11th that ended growing on September 4th when a wind storm took out all 10 leaves. It would have been 150 had it not dried out during the month and a week with no leaves. You can start them this weekend and still have a pumpkin over 1000 pounds. I had problems with fruit flies when I started giant pumpkins in late May in 2012,so my plant did die. The best thing you can do is have backups.

Three years ago, when the neighboring farmer's Roundup over-spray killed all my plants,(no fun), I germinated a seed on June 20th - in the garden June 30th - pollinated August 9th. Took it to the Canfield weighoff - 1,033 lbs. You win Pete!! Is there hope if you start this weekend - Yes!

Good question Bob. If the hot weather continues, it should help your plant grow faster, I would think. I have an 1109 Borgers plant growing that was planned as a backup. But the high winds on Friday night damaged my 1317 Clementz plant(my fault, as the greenhouse over it wasn't anchored well enough), so the 1109 Borgers and the 1912 Carter are my two competition plants now. Good luck to you!

I started early June in 2012 after a Roundup accident. Cecil sent me a plant via mail to salvage my season. I pollinated in August and was at 500 before it had a BES mid Sept.

In 2016 I had a plant that was in a wet spot didn't grow forever and I left it alone. Finally dried out and ended up filling in nicely and pollinated one in mid July, got to 964 And 15% heavy for sogpg weigh off

I use to always start this time of year. 800 to 1200 can easily be done starting now.
Pollinate your fit fruit on the main.
