If both pumpkins are the same.
Would you rather go with a pollination at 13.5 feet or with one at 19 feet?

If I had 19 foot of patch I would go with 19, because the largest pumpkin in Colorado last year was at 20 ft. I would still pollinate the other one just in case.

Hmmm73pounder...sounds like a madman....lol How can one have two pumpkins to pollinate? One at 13.5 and one at 19 on the same plant at the same time? Just curious.... :)

It seems really early to pollinate in a humid climate like Kansas, I have heard of several try and few succeed due to the high abortion rate. I would pollinate the 13.5 which I would assume is going to be the earliest to be pollinated, but keep the other one for at least another week after the 13.5 pollination. When you pollinate put a frozen plastic water bottle around the pollinated pumpkin to increase the chances of taking the pollination.

I've started prepping the area around the 13.5 location. I'm for sure pollinating the 13.5 foot one which should open friday or saturday. The 19 foot one will open in 10 or so days.

is there any validity in putting a white styrofoam cooler over the pollination site to retain the coolness longer and better? just a thought...

It's unusual there are none between 13.5 and 19 ft.

13.5 it’s way to hard to push them out that far I have done it and 12 to 14 feet out is perfect ... 15 to 20 I wouldn’t waste my time however A side vine set if all you have is a main set at 19 ft I would go to a side vine after 15ft

Thanks big city...A side vine set is a great idea for a backup...i'll start training a vine tonight
This plant seems to like setting pumpkins every 6 or so feet...one at 7, one at 13.5 and then it looks like one at 19
Maybe it knows the pumpkin is going to be huge and i'll need a ton of room between sets!

Also, pumpkinpal and 73pounder I haven't had luck with the styrofoam coolers or plastic water bottles. It probably works however I have to work during the day so I can't keep changing the bottles out. When it is 90+ and 80 percent humidity those water bottles melt fast.
I have just as good luck getting sets by just putting a white row cover over them.

I used to always shoot for 12’ out. Last year I switched to bigger plants and pumpkins between 15’-18’ and had my best year. Don’t grow on a side vine, go all in with one pumpkin.
