I know they like to grow berries in a North to south direction so they get sun on all sides. How does it affect AG's?? Anybody find a difference?? I would think growing in a Southernly direction might be best. Looking to plant a couple at a friends who passed away just before Christmas. Limited space at his house but what a grower. BNO all the way

MY opinion would be based on the direction of the wind, rather than of the sun, in that if the wind were to strongly/damagingly blow from the stump TO the end of the main vine, it'd be MORE ok than from any other direction ((FROM the sides or FROM the main vine tip to the stump, like roughing-up an animal's fur--- they probably don't like that) same with an AG plant!). as far as the SUN's direction, the leaves somewhat follow it all day anyway, and if there are no shade trees or anything blocking it, i'd not worry about it, although the PUMPKIN's coloration might be affected, but keeping shade LEAVES away from the fruit would alleviate that...

The sun comes from the same direction every time...

its been my experience here in southern utah, as our winds come out of the southwest, most of the time. if i grow form west to east, wind damage is kept at minimum, and the plant reaches for the morning sun with a bit better vine growth. tho i truly believe wind direction does play a fairly important part in the direction we choose to plan our layouts. this is just my honest option.

ahhh, the proverbial 'On the same page...'
I am very sorry about your friend, and what is 'BNO'?

Big n orange? Last year I had four one was ne, se, sw, and nw. I think they can sense heat/ light and want to invest more energy in the hottest/sunniest direction. For me, the ne plant did not fill out its patch, although it had huge healthy leaves and vines it just didn't seem excited about growing that direction. Also on plants that have been allowed to "do whatever" I've seen that the largest / fastest growing pumpkins will set on the southwest side of the plant. Wherever the energy is... That's where the plant wants to put its future.

South east side is all woods at my friends. Lots of sun after that...Southwest will probably be my choice...giving equal amounts of sun for the day. My patch is wide open and I never paid attention to the sun. Will take wind into consideration and yes BNO is BigNOrange.

I don't like having the stump in the same spot all the time, for disease reasons. So I move them around and have some growing in all directions. This year we have 2 going east to west, one west to east, 2 north to south and one south to north.

I have had PBs on n to s, s to n and w to e. I agree that it is best to move the stumps from year to year, so I make do with any direction.
