I have been seeing alot about the new CDL and log requirements for commercial drivers. The new provisions seem to add the transportation of items to win prize money as something that requires logs to be kept.

Does anyone here have knowledge of how these new laws will affect our ability to legally transport pumpkins? I know my sister has been told she must keep records for taking her horses to competitions.

Just curious how it may affect us?

Thanks,
Mikkal

Just my two (Euro)cents: Who the heck is taking a pumpkin to a weigh-off to win prize money??? (Talking about first priority aspects here!!!) All growers are taking the pumpkin to the weigh-off in order to meet and greet other growers and to have a day full of fun, aren´t we? It may, accidentally, happen that one wins some prize money.

Anyway, growers who (first priority) take a pumpkin to a weigh-off because of prize money and who second- or least- or NON-priority see themselves attend the weigh-off because of the community, please raise your hands (literally speaking).

Wouldn't that only apply to vehicles you need a cdl to drive

A pickup truck and trailer isn't bound by cdl requirements

have class b with air brakes here, your truck would need to be over 26.000 gvwr then cdl needed at least in iowa

that said I might need it this fall ( no idea on this prize money mikkal)

Prize money, may come under a compensation clause that you have to report. Pumpkin growing is a hobby, and I don't think you're considered commercial and have to keep logs. Jim

The new rules all say GVW over 10,000 pounds have to install electronic logging systems... that is where the issue is coming from. My sister has a 1999 dodge 2500 she pulls a gooseneck horse trailer with and they are telling her she has to install one of these Electronic loggers if she transports a horse for payment or she transports a horse for competition.

I know that I cross 10,000 GVW with my truk, a trailer and a pumpkin.

Here is a link that explains more clearly what I am talking about. This is geared towards horses and livestock but it applies to all hobbies utilizing a truck and trailer.

Is the horse transportation part of her business.

No, but going to competitions is. That's the part I wondered about for us as pumpkin growers. Many of the contests we go to have prize money and most of our transportation methods will weigh over 10,000 pounds. Just interested in if anyone knew how this might affect us, if at all.

Have they told her it's guaranteed to happen. That story is full of "may" and " potentially".

The mandate for electronic logs went into effect December 2nd of 2017. Per the law she has to install one prior to any shows this coming spring. It is cloudy and not clear exactly how it will affect her. I know all of the clubs around here know it affects them, but the governing agencies are not giving them clear advice on what steps to take.

As for pumpkin growers my advice would be keep doing what your doing but don't plaster social media with pics about everything involving the trip to and from weighoff. Keep doing your diary of growing them but don't leave a "papertrail" of the other.

I hope the sincere goal of this is to improve safety but looks like government manure lets find out if it is and if it stinks lets throw it back in their face.

You would be 100 times more likely to have a cop pull you over to take a picture, then for him to worry about ticketing some pumpkin grower on a log book.

I think the law is intended to stop commercial truckers who routinely pull long hours(bennies). The trouble is people who are only doing 10 or 11 get caught up. I have a friend whose company ships vegetables to the east coast taking 11 hours one way. Now that might become 2 days or finding a second driver . How much it will impact the price of goods remains to be seen.

I don't see this bothering us, however I may keep the "OVERSIZE LOAD" sign off the truck this season and the height pole off the wife's car in front of me. I work in the mining industry, have a Class A CDL, with Hazmat, air brakes and Tanker endorsements. think I will just stay in the loader I don't like to take breaks, nor do I like extra paperwork or GPS tracking
