The 3 pumpkins I was scheduled to take to our local festival were sabotaged. When a pumpkin has had a hole poked into it from either the left or right bottom front how long does it take to rot from the inside out?

Wtf..all the way through?

Yep all the way through. All three rotted from the inside out. I know the area from where each of the rot originated. I'm trying to get a rough timeline as to how long it would take for the damaged area to rot towards the outside then break open. All three broke open Saturday.

What pisses me off even more is my 2 sons along with their wives and my grandchildren came all this way to see the pumpkins my grandkids named go to the pumpkin fest and be weighed.

After some of the hostile e-mails I've received from growers on this site, I'm not surprised.

When some stranger from California tells you to walk out to your patch, dig your own grave, and fall into it, you realize that not everyone on this site is interested in maintaining a tightly knit community.

If you're talking about my DIAF comment on these boards, that was a direct reply to the e-mail mentioned above.

No regrets here.

I'm pretty sure that one of your good buddies hasn't been entirely forthcoming with how all of that started.

That really sucks Kent - I hope you're still coming over to MN for a weigh off or two

I'm not certain what I'm doing at this point Qtip. The one I intended for Anoka I ended up bringing to our festival here. I'm down to one pumpkin now. It's still growing in a makeshift greenhouse I put up for it to grow till the 13 then take it to Stillwater. But after the sudden loss of my three it more or less took the wind out of my sail if you know what I mean. I'll measure it again and see where I'm at. If it's not going to make a state record I'll just take it to Minot this weekend.

Sorry to hear that. The time to rot depends on the weather, the temperature, insects etc. I still hope to meet you at one of the Minnesota weigh-offs.

Photos posted of the three pumpkins. I should have done a better job cutting them open. I.E. I should have cut them further from the initial rotten area and slowly worked my way to the suspected entry wound. I know one thing for certain I won't be growing them here again next year. And yes lots of game cams next year. Better yet wireless cameras that in real time notify me on my cell phone.

Under your pumpkins, it appears to my eye that you used a mixture of soil with small pebbles, please tell me I'm wrong.....

That was from the first bags of sand I bought. When I dumped them on the foam boards when the kin were just babies I realized it was too coarse. I swept that off and replaced it with fine sand. All my kin beds are 1" foam insulation which I drilled 1/2 in holes approximately 1" to 2" apart then fine sand on top of that. The beds are raised approximately 4" then it gradually slopes for run off.

I just read through the whole post Hobbit. If this is true that is one dirty bastard. I can't believe they're people out there like this.

I've never had a problem but I still have cameras on both sides of my patch. Invest this winter on some type of surveillance.

I did some more dissecting one one of them. Picture in my diary. It shows decay that's funnel shaped towards the outside of the pumpkin. The wall thickness is approximately 8 inches. Looking through the whole towards the outside it where it popped open and the liquid ran out.

It's really hard for me to tell, but in this pic (below), I don't see how someone could have pierced it almost completely underneath. I am just playing Devil's advocate, but maybe you have some type of disease that caused rot from the inside out. I had that happen in 2015. Also, why wouldn't they just puncture the blossom with a really narrow wire where it is thinnest? Either way, I feel terrible for you and hate to see your season end like that.

That’s truly dirty if someone did something like that to your pumpkins. Sorry your season ended like that. Any chance it was rodent damage being they were located low on the fruits?

If it was rot it would be outside in reverse funnel shape. The only time I know of a hole shape like that would also have a crack running through it(which it doesn't). And three different fruit which the neighbor had been shown and knew they were the three biggest-cant be sure here in the peanut gallery but I'M not likeing what I'm seeing

Sad to see you never took my advice though.

& For the record I would never even dream of harming anyone else's pumpkin.
That's the lowest of the low!
Sorry for your loss, Hobbit!
