Subject: What seed grew your personal best?

I'm with Gordon... GO UTES!

We all think of ways to evaluate
seeds. Which are really the great ones? Well, we can all
list many great seeds, and I'm not disputing that they're
great, but how much of that greatness is a result of the
fact that if someone grows one great pumpkin from it,
every top grower will put that seed on their list, it gets
widely planted, and to some respect the seed is "made
great"...?

One way, (certainly not the only way) to look at this might
be, "what seed grew your personal best"?

In my case, the 831 Zunino grew my largest pumpkin.

Notice, it doesn't matter how big your personal best was.

837 Thorson grew my 576* I've also grown other "good" seeds, 940 Mombert 98 X 2, 1026 Holland, 723 Bobier, 831 Zunino, 963 Stucker, 895.5 Hester* the list goes on. Very satisfying to get it with my own seed.

Yes Cliff, my conclusion is that seeds are "made great." Even though my personal best (572) is from a 940 (98) Mombert, this year my daughter beat me out growing a 434 Isom (866 Mombert offspring)even though I grew the 845 Bobier and 790 Daletas. It's interesting to note that most "intermediate" growers grow their personal bests on things other than "top seeds," even though they have grown a few famous seeds as well (e.g. Bruce Orchard).

So far this data is interesting, but we'd need a lot
more... I'm also thinking that if we had enough data
it would also make sense to rank them in individual
years... that is, "In year 2003 I grew seed A and seed
B and seed C, and seed B was the best...". But I'm not
sure we have the desire to sort all that data. (Or do we?)
