In 2004 i want to grow 4 plants in flag-pattern. My question is ; how long may the side vines get? I have the space to let the first side vines get to about 28 feet. The next one will be 26 feet, the third 24 feet and so on. Is this too long for side vines?

i would say that's a bit long . myself i would go with 15' side vines. once they get so long they start to draw energy from your plant instead of suppling it. note though you should do what you feels right for you and your ground area you have. as well everyone who posts here will likely say something different.

28 ft ... then getting narrower... i think you should use the Christmas tree pattern. sounds like a good fit for that.

The hole idea of the flag is to save space for more plants and to grow a smaller plant so hopefully the plant will put it's energy into the pumpkin and not into growing vines. Grow 5 plants in the same space and your side vine could be 22 feet instead of 28.

if you tell us the dimentions of your patch maybe some of us could suggest possible plant configurations.
