Hi everyone, I have spent a few weeks contemplating what I should put up fo the 2004 contest. I have been leaning towards the 237 all along, but really wasnt sure it is something people would want. My reasoning for liking it for the contest is that I believe it will do well in both the heat, and the northern areas. Tonight I was in chat with 2 other growers that grew the 237 in 2003, and both agreed that they wanted to grow it again in 2004. This was on their own without the contest(Thomas and Pumpkinspice). Pumpkinspice grew a 734 pound pumpkin off of it. It was not planted very heavilly, and both Nic Welty and myself agreed that it did well for us and in the field test.
The 237 is also known as D. Beachy Cross 2002 F-801.5 Stelts #1 M-876.5 Lloyd #1 (on same plant as 807)
If some of you dont know. This is the exact same cross as the 846 Calai.
Please feel free to post questions or comments good or bad to this thread.

This is Tom's 846 Calai replicant cross
- if you didn't recognize the parents.
I think that this is a great option for the contest.

Tom, I think that will be a great seed. I am looking forward to growing it this year in the contest. Heck, if it isn't chosen for the contest I believe Id still give it a try. So 807 is the largest fruit you got off the mother (801) plant? What did the Father (876) produce?

If Tom thinks it's a good pick then that's good enough for me.

What was the color and general shape of the 734 that was grown from it?
Thanks, Cliff

Cliff and Everyone, the 734 was a medium orange color, very wide fruit with deep ribs..I will post a picture of in the photo gallery so you can all have a look at it... The pumpkin does appear lighter in the picture than it actually was but you will get a good idea of its shape..The plant itself was a good grower, problem free and the pumpkins had long stems...It was also my only pumpkin that went heavy to the charts and was grown on the newer side of my patch...Tom has made a excellent choice because both new growers and more seasoned growers could both get a real nice fruit from it...Hope you all enjoy growing it as much as I did....Sherry

Just saw the photo. I like the defined ribs. (kind of like six-pack abs?) anyway,... the date on the photo: 8/11/2003. Was this really harvested on August 11? If so, I'd say that 734 pounds is pretty darn significant on August 11!
My vote is yes.

depending on how many people enter the contest( Under 100) I could donate my 580 seed from 2001. It is an 846 Calai female which was only 40 days old when it stopped growing because of vine rot, but still beat the chart. Crossed with an 845 Bobier male which grew my 1260.4 The seed has done well for the few who have tried it. Has the potential to pop big ones and I hope will produce personal bests for people entering the contest. What do you think?

Craig, The 580 is one of the best seeds offered so far. What offsprings did it produce so far? If it will not be the seed for the 2004 contest, do you think you could send me one or two of your 580 seeds for some genetic crosses? Thanks, Martin

I think the 580 would be a great seed for the contest. It has grown two UOW pumpkins I know of one weighed 661 and was 16 percent heavy and one was 732 and was 23 percent heavy.
