            | Boehnke | Itzetown City | Wait til frost, ice and snow and it will be killed by nature. Or cover with black plastik, no light no growth, but cover, because of air circulation, not to close. | 11/27/2003 8:00:51 AM |

            | Engel's Great Pumpkins and Carvings | Menomonie, WI ([email protected]) | The only thing that will prevent weeds, that wont have an effect on your pumpkin is a good hoe. The manure will bring weeds seeds. John Girgus used landscape material last year. Not sure how much it helped. If you keep up with it, it should only take a few minutes per plant with a good "stirrup hoe". Wish there was an easier way. | 11/27/2003 9:19:15 AM |

            | big orange pumpkin growing | Oliphant Fce. PA. | Thanks for the replys, thats what I thought but wasnt sure if there was something you guys use. I have a small gas powered cultivator and it takes care of weeds fast.

            | Mr. Bumpy | Kenyon, Mn. | CAREFUL WITH THAT POWER CULTIVATOR!! Too Deep, and as I speak from exp., when you start thinking...better be careful near that vine..YOU ARE TOO CLOSE!! I agree the best weed control is a hoe. | 11/27/2003 11:37:13 AM |

            | saxomaphone(Alan) | Taber, Alberta | I tried an experiment last year. As soon as the snow cleared in March, I put a 4 x 8 sheet of plastic over a section of my garden, and dug in the edges so it would not blow away. This heated the soil and germinated the weed seeds much more quickly than the rest of the garden. As we usually do, we got a few really cold days in late March and that pretty much killed those weeds that germinated early. Alan

            | big orange pumpkin growing | Oliphant Fce. PA. | this is true about the cultivator, i usually use a hoe or my hands to pull the weeds away from the vines. cultivator usually use to get the weeds way from the far distance from the vine.I get alittle scared it might get out of hand and hit the roots

            | gordon | Utah | many weed killers don't work unless it is a certain temperature outside. ie warm... round up for example... read the directions. | 11/29/2003 11:52:59 AM |

            | docgipe | Montoursville, PA | A half inch to one inch of ground leaf...very finely ground leaf material will create an acceptable mulch. This is exactly what mother does in her mountains and fields that grow unattended by man. Nearly all weeds can be shaded and prevented from germination this way. The few remaining can be hoed or pulled by hand. This is a highly practiced method of maintaining a healthy low evaporation surface condition. It comes as close to excellent as any mulch I can think of. It lets the gases that need to get out flow freely, oxygen, water, fertilization all can enter freely. The worms write home to mother and invite their inlaws and outlaws to come and enjoy mecca....if you do not add to much synthetic ferts and insecticides that will kill them. | 12/5/2003 3:52:02 PM |
