            | svrichb | South Hill, Virginia | I posted some info about the growing contest for next year on the "weigh-offs" message board and haven't had too much response yet. I figure either:
 a) It's too early to start planning
 b) Nobody reads the "weigh-offs" message board in November
 c) Nobody gives a rip

I'm hoping to have some interest because I think it's a worthwhile cause. Especially to those growers who don't get to attend one of the big weigh-offs.

I'm looking for four different pumpkin seeds and two squash seeds. They have to be something people would be interested in growing. I'm not trying to dis anyones seeds so please don't be offended if we can't use yours.

I'm not trying to hijack the growing contest. I've talked to Mike Frantz and he was happy to let me deal with it this year.

This is also not a conspiracy of any kind, not a blood for oil proposition, not an attempt to put a man in the White House against the will of the people, not an attempt to fake the moon landing, not a U.S. led imperialist action, not a promotion of Christianity in our public schools, not an attempt to sell seeds on eBay, not a revision of the GPC squash rules, etc etc etc........

            | BrianInOregon | Eugene, OR | What do you guys and gals look for when picking a good seed? What traits/genetic line helps you to know it will be a good seed versus one that will produce small pumpkins? I have tried to become a member of AGGC but they are not taking new members so I'm unable to look at the "family trees" so I don't have a clue.
It may just be that I don't know any better because I'm a beginner, but I think almost any half way decent AGP seed has the same chance of producing a big pumpkin as any other "hot" seed does as long as the soil is in good condition and the plant is well taken care of. Who's to say that one seed WILL produce a large pumpkin while another lesser known seed won't? There are quite a few people out there growing 1000+ pumpkins and I think any of their seeds are just as likely to grow a whopper. That's my take on it anyways.... :-)

            | Big Kahuna 26 | Ontario, Canada. | Brian: It appears that most of the growers would like proven seed that has produced large pumpkins. 1,000lbers are generally the cut off line. These would be seeds from pumpkins grown in 2002 or earlier. You may be correct about growing a whopper. But most of the heavy hitters take no chances when it comes to selecting seeds. This years hotties include the 898 Knauss and 1236 Eaton which many are clamoring for along with many others.
