What do you think is the best cross of 2003? My vote is for the 752 Blair 845 Bobier x 1260 Weir.
Never crossed before
No reverse cross either
Male grew the 1370 Rose and the 951 Castelluci that was 20% heavy
Female is the 845 Bobier, many 1000+ progeny

1107 Cramer (846 x 1178). 1178 grew 973 cramer that was 19% heavy, but had a pin hole from a dill ring going across the ribs.

I like the looks of a couple of my seeds. Two of them in particular in which are first time crosses as well. 508 Neuville (946 Geerts 1996 x 846 calai) and 502 Palbrach (783 Daletas x 846 Calai). The 502 was grown by a friend but i crossed the fruit and i have all the seeds. The 846 male pollinater grew my 830 2003 that was 12.7% heavy and very orange.

i am sure there are so many good looking crosses from 2003 that it will be hard to pin point the next hot seed....there could be alot of them as well.

Hey Case, could you email me with the male pollinator of your 830. BF

I like Steve Davies crosses, 1260.4 Weir X 845 Bobier, 845 Bobier X 898 Knauss, and 803.4 Davies X 845 Bobier. A couple of good cross backs and i really like the 845 x 898 too.

Look at quality of parental progenies, over/under weights of parental seed and their progenies, pollinator production for 2003 and that's production over/under

and what's gonna throw heavy over-the-chart.

I like this thread, it helps newbies like me figure out how to evaluate potential great seeds. From the reponses so far my top three are the:
822 Hester (I would love to grow a 695)
502 Palbrach (World record seed x 846, wow)
543 Brock (My bet on the best potential to go heavy)

I'm sure that many people made great crosses this year. Just a few of my crosses that might be good are: 716 Miller(935 Lloyd sibbed) x 865 Mettler -- 1016 Daletas x 801 Stelts -- 1074 Calai x 801 Stelts -- 1230 Daletas x 1074 Calai. I'm bummed that I didn't use Casey's 846 Calai as a pollinator, I tried a few times but should have tried more.

That 801 stelts mentioned above in Randoo's post is a clone from the same 801 that grew the 1049 Koch 02.

The 1048 and 1036 Companion 03 will throw some pretty pumpkins!!! Check out the 991 Lancaster 03....very interesting looking fruit.

i like all the input, but as Ken would say, it's not a beauty contest. the 752 Blair is gonna go heavy, how heavy, well we will see, i would bet it gets planted though, just to many BIG genes in them seeds.....

The 525 Leonzi (805 Pukos x 790 Daletas), but then again I am biased.

Owen-
I like the 752 Blair cross also... but i have one BIG concern with it ... it weighed light... it taped to over 800 lbs. I think it weighed light because the shoulders on it were not big. they were neither tall nor wide.

The 752 plant was one of the worse looking plants. I was having troubles keeping it going because of the Verticillium wilt. Had it not been for the wilt I am sure that the 752 would have grown high and would have gone at or above the charts. The 1260 was a beautiful plant and the fruit on it was growing amazingly fast. The wilt hit the 1260 plant and I was unable to save it. It was the first plant to show signs and that is when I started applying the systemic fungicides. It was just too late for the 1260. It was almost too late for the 845(752) plant, but it pulled through but was badly affected by the wilt. It taped out at 790.6. I was hoping that it would have been the first one to break the 800 barrier in Utah. The fruit on the 1260 was pollinated 3 days later than the 845(752). At the time the wilt took the 1260 it, the fruit, had grown significantly bigger than the 845(752) fruit. We weighed the fruit off the 1260. It taped out at 90 pounds but as i recall it weighed in the mid to upper 120s. Weights can be deceiving though when it comes to immature fruit

i hear ya g1t, but i am talking about the seed from the 752, not the 752 itself.

Ray, nice cross, I got one too, the 628 olsen (707 toftness x 805 Pukos), get em while they are still easy to get...lol

my mistake i thought it taped to over 800. in my opinion... my concern is over its shape. i think i went light because of it's shape. i don't think it had a heavy shape to it. And don't think in this case the disease affected fruit shape. over all final weight- yes. shape- no. I've got some pictures if anyone wants to see them.

one question that needs to be asked ... is verticillium wilt transported into the seeds and thus to any resulting plants ?

note: weight estimates are not very accurate for smaller fruit.
I wish it would have gone over 800 for you ! I really do.

but if people are considering any seed I think they would like to hear others thoughts on it. I know i would like to hear what others think of the seeds that i am planning on planting.

Owen -
1/2 of the genetics in that seed are from the mother plant... which produced a pumpkin of that shape. and i believe (just me talking) many characteristics of pumpkins including shape are more influnced by the maternal genes than the male genes.
yes it is a great cross. but as i just said... i think people would like to know.

As for wilt in the seed. Vert wilt can not be carried in the seed. It can be carried on the seed if there is soil on them. Gordon, the color of the seeds, the ones that you get will be a blackish tan. Don't worry about the color of the seed. It is not soil on it honest. LOL
