Scott.........don't know as there is any serious difference in content or values. Some will say more weeds in horse manure. Believe this to be true but the nutrients are six of one and half dozen of the other. Poultry is higher in N.
In any care giving as we suggest the weeds don't have a chance. They are pulled or hoed at first. Then the leaves drop the light value untill near the end of the season. It is what is available to many so that is what I use most years. One factor is that cow manure may have less seed content but it still has some. Toss a coin you call it you win either way.

I was told that horses do not digest as well as cows so there are more nutrients in organic form. By the way I used poultry manure this season but have already prepared cows for the next.

I used both and mixed it with soil from my composter. Every year I add a large amount of horse manure directly from our local thoroughbred racetrack - nothing beats racehorse poop!!

I only used horse manure (I am a second year grower) and these are my results: 714.1Frei03(=802Dill02xself) - 709.9Frei03uow(=802Dill02x757.5Companion) - 591.9Frei03uow(=757.5Companion02x757.5Companion/802Dill02) - 584.2Frei03 uow(=1092Daigle02x802Dill02). --> The 714.1 and 709.9, they both were on the same plant.

Good luck to all pumpkin growers for the 2004-season

My pumpkin patch consists of 100% decomposed horse poop (Norwegian Fjord style that is.) Golden poop from golden horses. LOL. It is piled two feet deep on hard baked soil and rocks. My pumpkins weighed 300 pounds to 422 pounds each. (there were two pumpkins this size on each of two plants.) In the spring we add more manure...some is fresh, some 1 year old. there are cedar shavings mixed in as well. To cut down on weeds, i piled straw around the plants this year. there were no weeds at all using the straw. our main gardens also are grown in almost 100% manure as well. without the horse manure we would not have our gardens.

I use horse manure myself. I think it gives the roots a great medium to grow in as well as providing a good share of the nutrients. 601 lbs.

WELL WELL WELL>.look at Armstrong all caught up in the numbers game.....I used 4 year old "BROWN AND SWISS" dairy cow manure and still came up 1.2 # short of my goal!!LMAO!!!
ANYWAYS.....truthfully I agree with Doc on this one...the horse is full of weed seed....BUT th ecow which I hoped would be alot better wasn't either....so what do you think? I went with cow from a HUGE dairy operation this year...thinking there feed COLD be better then most..as they run 750 to 1000 cows 24/ 7 ....365 days a year...time will tell I guess......
My point (finally) is use what you can get easy and the most of..in YOUR situation..new soil....long drive for the cow...lots and lots of work to load and unload..IF horse is closer and easier..GO FOR IT!!! they all are about the same if you ask me!!! I used Horse for years...infact cow was a first last year other then one of 2 othewr times over the past 12 years of growing!!!

Scott is looking for numbers of growers hitting heavy who are growing by using horse manure. Even if such data were available the individual and vast differences of supplimental or additives to the basic fertilization would differ by about the same diffferent instances as any total number discovered.

Shoot I know one well known heavy hitter who uses no raw animal manure. I know one who uses heavy foliar feeding and another who only uses fish and kelp.........and so on. The key observation that I think I see is a definate leaning into 10%+ humus zones and that in one way or another must come from living material. Which animal or collection of compost materials it comes from is unimportant. This soil building can not come from synthetic sources.

Good call Doc........i guess being in a new patch for next year im anxious to get things going. Hauling cow manure has become a major chore, and horse is readily accessible. i just hope i can learn to like the smell!......i love the smell of cow manure, but have never really been fond of horse. Dont even talk to me about chicken! oh man!!

I used horse manure for the new patch this year and didn't have much in there at the start of the season so also used chemical and organic ferts, water soluble 15-30-13, calcium nitrate, sul-po-mag and superphosphate at the start of the season plus vigoro fall and winter lawn food delayed release. I grew my largest pumpkins ever this year with 4 over 600 lbs. and 1 over 700. spent the day today spreading another 25 yards of horse doo on the patch and got it tilled in with 200 lbs of lime. Cover crop goes on tomorrow and it will be put to bed for the winter unless the soil test tells me I need to add even more lime. Hoping for even bigger pumpkins next year now with all the horse poop added. Weeds will always be present so I don't worry about that. If they are kept in check at the start of the season through June then they aren't too much of a problem.

I used horse last year and got 880. This fall I put cow on though. I know "heavy hitters" who only plant a cover crop every winter.

hey scott if you love the smell of cow manure that much you would be more than welcome to come stand in my cow shed while they are milked all 660 of them but you have to move pretty quick if on poops and coughs at the same time you could stand at least 6 feet back and still get a fair shower at the moment the grass is just to rich that they are eating at the moment. LOL
I suppose i could make the offer open to anyone if they are keen enough to come visit in New Zealand

I've never been in you lovely country. The day you are measuring a world record OTT and see no immediate problems tip me off. I would be tempted real seriously, to come and hold my breath with you, at your weigh off and build a vacation around the trip for my wife and I.
