Okay we did the 455 contest, we did the 840 contest, we've done the squash contest.......Seeing a pic of Tom Beachy the other day got me thinking, maybe we could do a contest of the largest fruit grown from a pumpkin that was under 100 lbs.? I know lots of you have culls, or late season crosses that are under 100#. I also know its early to be talking about this, but i figured, before i forget, let me make a post about it:).....so what do you guys think? I have a 53 lbr that was 6.15% heavy for its size!! Scott

So are you saying looking at Beachy makes you think of things under 100#? It would be a good idea to help get some of the good crossed small pkn's in the ground. So would it be any seed that weighs less then Beachy? Ken

By the way it’s really difficult to get a small fruit to the maturity. So the smallest mature AG fruits should be recognized as a work of art. Has anybody ever grown a mature AG of a basket ball size? Well, it’s a winter debate… Jernej

Scott, did you made a germination test of that seed. Because i have an 80 lbs and most of the seed covers are empty.

i havent harvested the seeds yet, however the fruit was on the vine for over 60 days so i would imagine they would be okay. I have had other fruits in the past that germinated fine, and were of similar size. Ken, i was talking about Tom's 21lbr that i saw a pic of, not Tom himself! LOL. Gordon, i crossed dan carlson's 500 onto my 547, that was the cross. Scott

I like the Idea. I only grew a 42 lb AG this year. So this would be right up my alley. Tom

seems like a stupid idea to me. the point growing ag's is to grow big. If you grow small ag's on purpose why grow ag's at all.

the idea is not to grow a small AG, but to grow the biggest one from one under 100 lbs. Call it an exercise in genetic capability if you will.

I would call it a bizarre idea which includes the stupid part. But the other part is art. Because, be honest, our sport to grow a big one is also bizarre. One could call it even stupid without trying it.

I have only space for one plant, I wouldn't want to use it on a super small unproven seed. A small proven seed is another story. I don't like the idea.

If you only had room for one plant, i certainly would not expect you, nor would i want you to, take that chance. The idea is for those of us with maybe a little extra room and the idea that "why not?, maybe this could work". I think calling the idea stupid is a little short sighted, but to each his/her own.

there are no small proven seeds... that's the point. maybe there should be.
maybe it could be ANY pumpkin under 100 lbs. ( or 200 lbs ) not just scotts pumpkin ???

scott i like the idea and think that someone has seeds enough from a small cull pumpkin to give everyone that wants to participate seeds at this time my last spot is open this could be interesting

I grew a seed from my own 40 lb squash seed in 2002....it grew me a 572.5 lb uow pumpkin....grew so fast it split....it was on its way to somethin big....i have considered trying it again some day...but I only saved 5 seeds and have 4 left. THe cross of the 40* est '00 was 596* Johnson 99 x 788 wentzell 99. The 788 grew my 762 that year. The 596 was just not cared for....small squash.
I'd be totally for this contest, but I think we need to make it any 100 (or 150) lber or less....see if we can find a gem in the lower ranks....a seed doesnt have to be from a 700+ lb fruit to grow a 1200 lber....

This sounds like an interesting idea. I grew a 141.5 lb pumpkin this year (my first year) and I got my seeds from Stokes Seeds so I have no clue about the genetics. I don't think I will ever plant the seeds from this pumpkin as I only have room for one plant, but it would be really interesting to know the potential of this or other small pumpkins. I would be willing to give the seeds from this pumpkin to a contest (or to anyone who wants them). It is a nice shaped, orange pumpkin (check out my diary) I am going to change a lot of things I did wrong this year, so maybe it was my technique and the brutal heat we had, or the seed. Who knows? If anyone wants my seeds, let me know. Alan
