What are the essential tools required for carving a big one?
Preferably ones I could get from a hardware store.

A carrot peeler. The old kind with the swivel handle. A "V" knotch chisel. A small skinny sharp saw blade....Look at the pumpkin and decide what it is before you start hacking away. Its not that different than jack-o-lanterns only a bigger scale to work with. Have 5 gallon buckets ready and a corner elbow from 4" galvanized duct for the guts. The elobw really scrapes the insides out well. Dont forget to post your creation...I like carving them as much as I like growing them. Shannon

I'm going to use different size spoons that I have sharpend the ends of. These should work for getting the basic shape you want and then use smaller carving tools for detail.

Power jig saw with long blades. Boneing knives which are long, thin and kept very sharp.

Pottery tools work very good. Can be found at craft stores.

A pack with everything you should need ~$10.

i used a sturdy serated bread knife, a mellon baller, and a small 'made for pumpkin carving' knife for the smaller details. It was a lot of fun, will post a pic soon for you Shannon
