In just ten days, my cover crop is breaking through the soil. I'm using a combination of Hairy vetch, buckwheat, winter rye and red clover. I've also added Austrian winter field peas. I get almost as excited seeing this crop break through the soil as I do my pumpkin plants in the spring! :>)
We are having a warm and wet October....no signs of freezing on the horizon.

ohhhh I feel a tallest winter rye crop contest coming on. If I was not in Zone 4, I would be game...lol Shannon

P.S. excellent choice for cover crop selections. Where did you get it.

LOL, if we have a tallest cover crop contest I think that I played unfairly!! I attempted to reduce my weeding work over the season by spreading straw over my patch. Even though it did reduce a lot of weeds, the straw was very seedy and I had my cover crop poke up in august!!!! I didnt know which I hated more, weeds or a crop of barley in my patch. Oh well, leason learned and now I have months head start on the tallest cover crop contest, LOL

Stan,

I know the feeling, I have planted my cover crop and am now anxiously awaiting its emergence. I went with a combo as follows: 50% Fall Cereal Rye grain, 20% Austrian winter peas, 10% Common Vetch, 10% Crimson Clover and 10% Buckwheat. Of course, I added and tilled in 60yards of manure and some gypsum first...lol. Dale

Shannon,
One can buy rye from the local feed store.

Dale,
WOW....where did you find a "mix" like that?

I tried oilseed radishes and am hoping for the famed fumigant action they are supposed to naturally provide. Has anyone tried these and had success? Also, how tall do they need to get before winter for me to get this to work right ? I have disease problems out the wazoo in a new patch and am desprite to get this to work ( I am leery on the chemical fumigation).
