right now my plant laid down from stump + 2 " of vine. from there it goes straight up about 8" with a very thick unbendable vine. how can i help to get this to lay down with out snapping? i was thinking of taking a hair dryer, to heat up the vine and bend slowly then pile dirt on it to keep it there. but this sounds risky to me so any advise is welcome from this rookie

the heat from a hair dryer will most likely kill the plant, just make some kind of support for the vine so it doesn't slam down onto the ground and break when it gets longer you will be able to lower slowly to the ground

It will bring itself down in another day or two or be long enough that you can gently encourage it to go down.

Show it some pictures of naked fat old people, that should take the starch out of it.

I would fill the entire area with soil. Cover it all up and train new vine growth to lay flat. Good luck

support it with garden stakes in an "X" formation. do 2 or 3 x's. as the vine grows, you can open up the "X"'s and also move them out. the vine will eventually lay down for you. Dont try to push it down, those vines that grow up are brittle. What seed is that from? Scott

you could try a nightlight in the direction you want it to grow to see the affects of phototropism at its finest.
