On October 19th there will be a small pumpkin boating outing near Canal Fulton, OH. (approximately an hour west of canfield) Consisting of at the least Nick Hamilton and Nic Welty.
A tentative schedule is for boat building from 10AM to 11 and actual boating at 1130ish.
You are welcome to come and observe the festivities or even bring your own pumpkin boat.
Having never done this before, I expect it to be a thoroughly hilarious experience.
The exent will occur at:
6636 High Mill Ave. Massillon, OH 44646
Please e-mail me if you have questions.
Nick Hamilton
I would like to extend a specific invitation to a certain indiana grower whose dad doesn't realize there are more important things then hayrides. :)

Someday...maybe not this year but some day.....there will be a pumpkin boating race down the mighty Chippewa River betwixt Shannon and myself...(we all know my dad will get me all rigged up and I'll kick his ass in the race, but let's all just pretend he has a chance for his sake).

Yup I have done it before in Ohio, lots of fun. All are welcome to drop by and watch me take the "801.5 Clone Monster" out for a spin on the lake. May also get to see me get wet when I make attempts at seeing how big a motor I can use to go as fast as I can.
Nic Welty
p.s. no, if I kill myself none of you are in my will to get all my seeds

The NHGPGA has done this for the past 3 years... Just make sure you have some sand for extra weight. I think it usually takes 100 lbs of sand to weigh the pumpkin down. Otherwise it floats too high in the water and wants to tip over. Check out the photos on

Alan Reynolds actually has a patent on his pumpkin boat design. I think he might have worked with Wayne Hackney back when he became the first person to ever pilot a pumpkin on Candlewood Lake in Danbury CT. There's a section in Don's new book about it. Alan used a peice of plywood on top to attach a bracket for an outboard motor. Then he added some sort of balast to keep the thing upright. A rather important detail if you ask a sailor. LOL
Good luck boaters & Red Skies at Night to you all!

We just had our 5th annual Pumpkin Regatta in N.S. this past weekend and had a total of 22 paddlers, 5 motor entries, and 2 experimental entries. The first place paddler who was 70 yrs. old by the way, finished the 750 M (approx. 1/4 mile) course in 11 minutes. The first place motor finished in 6 minutes. Its a great event and draws alot of attention. Anyone wishing to look at some of our pumpkin boats can visit our website at www.pumpkinregatta.com or worldsbiggestpumpkins.com The pictures are from last year as this years race has not been updated yet. Best of luck!
