There have been a few inquires into the status of these contests. Id like to apologize for not providing updates as frequently as i should have. I misjudged the amount of time id have available and how much time this would consume. I would also like to add that many growers journal entries were very vague and walked a fine line between following the rules and just trying to sneak past, which makes keeping track of these contests very difficult and i must say extremely disapointing. Shortly following this post I will display what appears to be the current status of the contests. If you disagree with what you read, please contact me via email and we can discuss. The following list is not a final list, please view it more as a rough draft. Thanks, Mike Frantz

Squash Contest....
1. Quinn Werner 900 lbs 2. Katrina Pearce 698 lbs 3. Zach Koch 697 lbs 4. Ernie pierce 509 lbs (will review rules for 2 per family) 5. Brent Wolfley 140 lbs
Congratulations to Nic Welty for his 500 lb squash and to Steve Razo for his amazing 980 lb squash. Unfortunately i feel that Nic and Steve's diary entries fell a little shy from the required posting requirements and will most likely not be considered for prizes. Also Sue Sheridans diary is under review and she may or may not make the prize list.

I hope the majority had a good time with these contests. I welcome any feedback you care to give. These contests and or my directing them in the future completely hangs in the balance of the feedback I receive. Thanks, Mike Frantz

My 840 is sitting at or about 200lbs. I may take it to a weigh off the 18th of this month. I have a stem spilt right now. Seems to be solid though. I will leave it on until then ... Greg

Does the fact that my 840 had no seeds disqualify me?

Well that's one on me I guess, never recalled seeing that rule...
3.c. "To be eligible for prizes, all rules must be followed and only one prize will be awarded per family."
Had I known that I would have not entered don't think the wife would have either. But oh well, I guess I'll still have to kick in my four seeds as an entry fee. would have been nice to get some other seeds seeing as I posted regularly.
The ones that did not qualify either Nic or Steve are they still kicking in seeds.
Maybe next year you should have it that regardless of family if you put your name up for the contest at the START and follow all the rules, posting etc. you should be allowed to finish.
"ONE PERSON, ONE FRUIT"
Plus seeing as were in the same family the name is spelled the same, Pearce.

Thanks Mike it was a fun contest!
Ernie, if I understand you correctly... you are saying that if you knew it was 'one prize per family', neither of you would have entered????
Just fyi... nearly 50 persons entered the squash contest. Look how many are left. Some contestants kept journals right up to the end and then lost their fruit. By both of you entering, you simply increased your odds of placing.
You both happened to do great and I commend you for your accomplishments. Great job!
Katrina will get 4 seeds from EVERY contestant's best squash. That includes Ragu, Nic and anyone else that grew one. That is also pretty clear.

Brent:
First off, Maybe I shouldn't be on here right now as I'm pissed to the gills.
Second, I grow and grew for myself this year regardless if Katrina is my wife, If anything she was my biggest competition. I came in fourth and fourth it is but because she's my wife I'm not allowed to have a little recognition and claim some great seeds.
Oh ok now I see she gets the seed and I trade seed with her.
And yes I wouldn't have waisted my time keeping my diary, same reason we both took fruit to the weigh-off we both could enter and compete "NO" one per house rule. if it was we only rented a small truck and hauled the two biggest fruit who's ever they where.
Ah what the heck... not into all this controversy. Next year I'll grow for myself. when my fruit are done they will sit in the patch regardless of size.
I had it this year with the weigh-offs and all the BS. not worth my time. You who went to Smoky Lake know what I'm talking about. People getting screwed on weights and one local family wrongly being annouced for a place they didn't win and made a fuss till they were paid out, then this, who cares if 50 people entered the contest and lost their fruit mine wasn't one of them. If it was I wouldn't be writing this.
Enjoy your 4th place seeds BrentW I hope you grow a big one next year from either Katrina's 895.5 x self or my 856 crossed back to the 895.5.

Sorry all, just a little pissed off and this isn't the place to air it or is being a poor sportsman, those that know me know this isn't the case, just some other issues and the beer tonight doesn't help...
Again I apologize to any I offended in this great sport.

Mike spend a lot of time with all the seed lists and rules etc... A pretty daunting task. Everyone had input to the rules and they were posted for coments well in advance of the contest start.
No need to burn bridges on this websight because your mad at how your weighoff went. I would be mad at that too! In fact I am!!! But no reason to be rude to me... here... about it.
My final squash will be just over 200 lbs. A real monster, I know. I had already asked Mike to take my name off the 'place' list. But since it is still on, maybe we can work something out to get you the seeds. I don't really care that much. I was doing it for the fun and the contest got me to try squash for the first time.
Email me privately if you want to vent further.

Brent:
Like I said I apologized,
Seeds???
I don't need any seed, in fact got to many seed...
But it would have been nice to finish a rough year, regardless of who I'm married to or if my cat is blue. If I had seen that rule I woulnd't have bothered, same reason I didn't enter the pumpkin contest, wasn't interested in growing the 840. and as far as input I recall a scheduled chat for input but was working and not able to attend.
enough said...

For all those that have sent e-mails in regards to not being in agreement with this rule and have offered seed to myself, like I said I don't need the seed.
I will however be replying to give you my address and all the seed will go into the seed bank for other growers to obtain.

Got it Ernie. I posted before your post showed up.
As for seeds... I was just responding to your own coments above...
"...would have been nice to get some other seeds' and
"I see she gets the seed and I trade seed with her".
'Guess I read it wrong. It wouldn't be the first time. Later. Brent W.

Ernie, First id like to say sorry for spelling your last name incorrectly. Just an honest mistake. Secondly, the one per family rule was set up to spread the wealth or to keep one family from dominating the contest. For example, what if a heavy hitter, his wife, and their 4 kids joined the contest? What chance would someone like I stand of placing? You understand the purpose of the rule? Maybe it should have read 2 per family is the max. I guess hind sight is 20/20? Thirdly, I do not appreciate your rage as you were the one who failed to read or understand the rules. Everyone at one time or another has sounded off inappropriately, so i do not look apon you in a negative light. Finally, You did such a great job with your squash, were religious in your postings and due to the lack of finalists, I feel you should be rewarded. I am strongly considering amending the one per family rule. As long as I don't receive a flood of objections, this should be considered ammended to two per family. I only wish you would have contacted me personally instead of sounding off here. Believe it or not, these contests have been very taxing as it is. Mike Frantz

I wasnt in the contest but I think it is obivious Ernie did not grow his wifes squash or she didnt grow his so I think they both should be awarded. Just an non biased opinion.

Great contest, and thanks for the hard work. I entered the contest, followed the rules, and I had a 752.5 lb true green squash, and deliberately made a post at least once every three weeks through the season to meet the requirement as per the contest guidelines. I met the once per three week posting requirement. I just joined because I wanted to share true green seeds, swap seeds with others, and promote more true green growers. If you don't want me in your contest, that is fine, I guess I don't have time to send seeds out anyways.
Thanks for your efforts, and I hope everyone keeps considering the true green as an option for their patches
Nic Welty
p.s. I have more true green seeds than anyone will ever be able to plant, if you want a big green one, pester me for seed, and I may get some sent out around Christmas when I have break

Sorry bud had to laugh at that one, you hit it right on the head.
I spent all season listening to Katrina telling me how ugly my fruit was and that if she grew it it would have hit the compost pile along time ago.
But I'm proud of my 509lb birdbath/bean bag chair...
I'll post a pic of it at the weigh-offs in my diary, even the MC got a chuckle out of it. but it was solid and made it to the scales. When I take it down from were it is on display before I cut it open for seed if any I plan to crack a cold beer and sit in it been wanting to do that all season...

Ernie, that squash looks like it would have made a great garden lounge chair! Im with Nic I grew a 834# squash that was so green it was almost black, I can't give all the seeds away here as the majority will go to my club (PGVG) but I hope to have a batch for enthusiasts here on BP.COM
It was great watching everyone's progress, and I hope we do it again next season when my soil is better!
A special thanks to Mike Frantz for all his hard work in putting this contest together!
