in the last 2 years i have put a shade over 4 pumpkins, 2 last year and 2 this year..for some reason the ones i did this to all rotted from the inside out??the ones i didnt cover you could hammer out a horseshoe on them??now is this coindience?? have any of you experienced the same thing?? i used brown shade last year and black this year.

if your shade was touching the would act like a solor panel and basical cook your pumpkin. even if there not touching i would imagine it would heat up. the best i've heard of is those silver thermal blankets. the keep the heat out in the day and the heat in at the night. making splits less likely.,

I am thinking about using a plain blue colored plastic tarp next year. Is this a good idea or not?

I used a cheap blue tarp with a grey color opposite the blue. Kept my pumpkin shady, had good ventilation, and just enough see through light to make a good orange color. I used black last year, had no rot, but it got really hot under my pumpkin and part of it was white because of no sun. Hope this helps, Jim
