On the silly subject of injecting pumpkins, has anyone else heard that birth control pills help pumpkins grow bigger? I talked to a farmer today who swore this was true.

One guy told me this too, 'cause he heard squash contain estrogen or something...but in reality, good genetics and disciplined application of 'conventional' growing techniques (manure, watering, burying, etc) achieve the big ones as far as I'm concerned.

I know of the 'injecting with milk' theory, and the same person who told me about birth control pills, also asked if I injected beer. Are there any other silly things that people put on or in their pumpkins?

Just to clear things up....Viagra is good for long gourds and birth control pills stop pumpkins from swelling. Seriously now...I heard that one too Alan. I wouldn't put much stock in that one. There is no secret little trick to this hobby that the big hitters use that the rest of us don't do. Most weigh-offs are won or lost before a seed is put into the ground. Take the time and effort to get your soil balanced with a high organic content and correct p.h. Your luck will improve greatly and you can use those birth control pills for other recreational pursuits.

One of the main ingredients that BC pills are made of is horse urine. By keeping the female in heat(thru injections), you get the hormones needed for BC pills. We sell urine to a local pharmacutical company that makes the pills. I have used urine from our horses on my fruit during pollination periods and have had 100% pollination for 3 years now. As a weekly feed program, have not used as such, maybe will try next year. pumpkinpiper

This is one case where manufactured urea from the bottle or box prevents a lot of horse kicks. Directing the horse stream to a gallon jug for distribution is quit a trick.
