A local garden center wants a 500-650 lb pumpkin for display. What is the going rate/lb and what percent of the seeds should the grower retain? How about renting one? How much for say a weekend or by the week?

steve:
i ,ve come across this question before,i,d ask 1.00$ a lb for sale so 500 to 650.00$ rent you have to deliver it and pick it up not an easy task lots of work 2 to 3 hundred is what i'd ask. seeds you should ask for atleast 50% of them back.Draw up a little contract just to be sure either way. i m on my way to Victory super market in N.H i have two beautys ones 375lb and the other id around 400lb they are interested in them as a decoritive display item or items.Im asking 650.00 for both delivered.Hope this helped.John

Sounds like these Orange beauties have turned to GREEN, and we're not talkin about squash.

My only one left just under 500 lbs. goes to an ice cream parlor for a three day weekend following weigh off. A pumpkin ice cream promotion and see the monster pumpkin. I take it in my trailer with a bit of straw to season it up.
The agreed fee...$200.00 and all the pumpkin ice cream I can eat. It is a few blocks from home. I secure it every night.

The following week it is going to a carving display where any kid who shows up gets a field pumpkin to paint. The fee was $250.00 for the pumpkin. I get all the seeds and remove them on delivery. They own the fruit to carve.

Do you think it depends on how rare it is as well. A 650 pounder in Utah should be worth more than a 650 pounder in NH.(?) 640 lbs was the biggest in last year's weigh off and it was from out of state.

Makes sence, but I am not sure.

Also, once you tell the garden center it is ileagle to sell the seeds, you may get all of them back no problem.

Supply and demand determines the cost. No one other than yourself cares what you were foolish enough to spend on the grow. As other retailers see the crowd your fruit attracts the price of sale or rental can go up. You can create your own demand. You can just as well outprice your service and have nothing.

Whatever you do start a presentation diary so you can show your pumpkins in promotion to another possible user next year. If competition is good and beat you to the draw photograph and document your good competition. Use it to present your idea elsewhere next year.

Good retailers plan a year in advance. Good retailers know what their competition have done in promotions. Others will be receptive to you if you are the new kid on the block.

The bigger and professional best in an area is the best place to start. Seek potential users who advertise regularly.
