my 1037 bobier just planted 15 day's ago is throwing 2 leaves at a time and the vine is doubling up, but still fairly round. has anyone ever grown a large successful pumpkin on such a plant and was it on the double main vine?

if it's a double-vine just terminate one of the ends, if it's a flat-vine then train a secondary into a main and terminate the flat one.

let it go for a little while, many double vines go back to normal without any help. if it's still double when the vine is 5 or 6 feet long, then you want to consider surgery. no need to panic yet.

sounds like a flat vine in the making ... but andy's advise is right on.
note: I had a flat vine this year - I tried experimental surgery on the tip of the vine. cut a little more than half of it off. it grew out as a single vine for a couple of feet then went flat again.
as far as I know there have been no really big pumpkins grown flat vines.
McP- "get them to join back together" ??????

My 582 Hester doubled early and I choose to make the first side vine into a main. The pumpkin rotted on the bottom after it taped out at 723.

Two of my plants this year were double or flat vine, The 673 Glisczinski and the 1230 Daletas. I had a very difficult time setting fruit on them both. I finally got some late July sets and now have a 400 lber on each plant. Personally, in the future if I grow a seed that I suspect may flat-vine, I will plant something next to it as a backup. If it goes flat, it gets pulled.
