The great success of Bruce Whittier with the 582 Hester got me thinking. If I had the 582 Hester, would I have planted it in the first place? Probably not. I think we're all a little prejudice against seed form small pumpkins despite the lineage. I realize that Bruce planted the 582 last year to great success but why did he plant it in 2002? There's hundreds of seed out there with great lineage also but they never get planted. I'm just as guilty as anyone for chasing that hot seed. Does the world really need another 723 x 845 cross? When you think about it, in all probablity the best seed cross ever made is in all likelihood sitting in a jar in someone's basement, doomed to never being planted. How many seeds are distributed yearly that get stuck in growers freezers waiting for someone else to plant first? I think the real lesson learned here is to grow your own. Believe in your own crosses and prove them out yourself. Now I'll let you get back to your sock drawer looking for that 582 you threw in there a couple of years back. ;0)

Right on...if you do not plant your own seeds, it is unlikely that someone else will do it spontaneously.
Of course, if you are a "heavy hitter", finding people to plant your seed is usually not a problem. :>)

currently there are 352 582 seeds that have been given out to various growers and organizations around the world. All have been given id numbers like I do with all my seeds as to avoid the probability of bogus seeds. Should you have one I can verify who it originally went to and the trade trail can begin there. Just give me an email should you have any questions.

I hear that the 582 is going to be part of the PGVG annual member seed give away for 2004....lol, that would perk up the ole membership.

Seriously, congrats on your seed doing so well Brett!

When you make friends with any grower and gain faith in his or her opinions the seed of that person naturally becomes more attractive. If that person also coaches you along a bonding friendship and faith in each other grows.
....Truth is that there are a lot of very good seeds out there. Given the TLC of an excellent grower good things often happen. There will be many discovery seeds as more and more of us grow different seeds each year and make crosses that are suggested by those same good growers.

I personally think that most heavy hitter's could do wonders with nearly any seed that' s out there today. There are exceptions I'm sure...

Also, I think it's a shame when only 1 or 2 seeds from a pumpkin are attempted and they turn out to be duds or were not allowed to reach their size due to poor managment. Imagine if the first seeds grown out of the 845 Bobier or 846 Calai were duds...

I know I got a dud out of the 845 Bobier this season and also know that I could have done tons better with some plants in the past if I knew what I was doing.

At the same time, If I had another 845 Bobier I would be hard pressed not to put it in next year and even more hard pressed to put in an unproven seed instead of it!

Small stuff can still be good stuff and I'll be planting a good cross in '04...from a small pumpkin of my own.

Of course I would plant the 582 Hester NOW! That's not the point Wayne. If some one didn't have the smarts/luck to plant it in the first place, chances are it would be never have been discovered to be a great seed. BTW would you take a small blonde child for one of those 582's ? I really can't see the point in having two kids anyway. ;0)

could'nt agree with you more cowpie.I know a little history behind the 582. I started that 582 last year but did't like the vigor of the seedling. Bruce lost a couple plants to frost and ask me if I had any extra plants. I showed him my plants I deemed unfit for my garden and one plant he chose to take was the 582. If it was'nt for a frost or him picking another plant the 582 seed planted this year would stll be in a seed pack. An intresting side note here, it was Bruce in the first place that caused me to plant that seed. We were at a seed swap at Jim B house and he told me he really liked the cross of the 582, so I picked it up.
That whole experience taught me that probably the best seeds never get planted. That caused me to plant my 756 and will probably get a 1000# out of it. I Planted the 582 this year and crossed it with the 1186, you better that seed will be planted in my patch next year

for those more biogically inclined than me, why is the 940 mombert(1998) x 1026 holland cross so successful, genetically speaking from a giant pumpkin grower's perspective? I mean it's not a hybrid vigor cross really, is it?

biologically, is that a bloody word?

on further inspection... perhaps it is... a hybrid vigor cross

I'm just staring at my buttercup squash contemplating the fact that I can cross this sucker with a plant from a near 1500lber. that blows my mind!!!!

the 567.5 mombert screws up the hybrid vigor cross.. the last post was not needed. It resulted from a brain cloud.

How about the 120 Frantz? (138# Big Max) X (922.5 Emmons)...crossed with a 940 Mombert '98.
Now that should be interesting to see what happens next year....
