I know all the discussion/advice about pruning (we'll maybe not all), I'm just curious to see how much pruning those of you who have grown one over 800lbs do.
I think this is why I am having trouble breaking past the 600lb mark. I start off great with pruning a burying vines, then I always seem to fall behind in August (holidays/family things) and by September the patch is a mess of vines. I feel that the plant then begins to decide to try putting its energy into trying to start new pumpkins, eventhough I am tip pruning and removing all females.

myself (grew one 900lbs) found that half hour each morning prunning and buring vines worked for me. i never let a vine come off a secondary and had my vines sniped and buired at the 10' mark main went 30' then buried. but at least every 2 weeks i would get on my hands and knees to look under the leaves and i would find 2 or 3 new vines that seemed to come out of no were which i would completly remove.

Pruning, next to vine burying, are the two most important things you can do to your plant during the season to maximize growth. All the fertilizer in the world will only make long vines longer if yer not pruning them. You need a means of directing the plants energy into the fruit, and pruning is that means. Even after all secondaries have been deheaded, and all tertiaries stopped, there are still vine tips that pop up here and there. I make every effort to stop these as well.

I need to prune more, stay in the patch longer, barrie more of my vines and feed sooner. I think I have the watering part down pretty good...Greg
