Can a fruit grow and rot at same time? I posted about 10 days ago about blossom end split. The split ended up with hole about 1/4 inch diameter and was exposed to air for less than 4 hrs. I filled with caulk about 10 days ago. The fruit was gaining from 25-38 lbs a day before split/hole. Since I filled with caulk (the hole) it slowed to 35 pounds total gain over the last 8-10 days. Can the fruit be growing and rotting from the inside out? I've been "gambling" here leaving it on vine. I want to reach est. 700+ pounds before I cut it off and get weighed. When hole appeared, she was at roughly 635 pounds and yesterday she was at 670 pounds. Any thoughts on growing and rotting at same time? When I tap on her, she has a solid "thump" sound still. Thanks for any thoughts on this matter.

Mike, the fruit can be increasing in dimension and actually be rotting. Ive had it happen to me before. there was a split on the bottom and i didnt know it. The fruit was still increasing in size, then i found a large soft spot. when i cut it open the entire inside was rotted out. check around the ouside of the fruit for soft spots, especially near the blossom. My seven hundred pound 1097.8 TC grew aproximately a week, at 25lbs. a day, while at the same time having a split and internal rotting. In any event there was nothing I could have done to save it.
