Do I compact the dirt first and then put the sand down. What about ants. I have dusted and sprayed and sprayed and sprayed.... still have ants. Won't sand just attrack more ants ? My pumpkins have finally started growing, borer set back, heat and humidity. Whats left of my vines are almost in perfect placement now. I have to put something under the pumpkins, the soil never seems to dry and I fear some odd disease or bug haven. Maybe sand and then a piece of weed block ? Feedback please !!!

i used sand under mine and i had no problems. ants stay away and water (watered 3hours a day) drained quikly. i would not compact soil underneath as it will interfere with drainage.

I dug out the soil underneath my fruit 2'x2'to a depth of 6"and filled with bags of playsand. This was at 20 days.Excellent drainage, and no pest problems in or around sand.

I use builder's sand because it is in 80lb bags and costs a tad less than white play sand. Delivered sand comes to my house in a minimum fifteen ton load. Can't use that much in my simple little two plant patch. I pay $2.69 a bag and used five so far. Will need maybe three more bags. Source any builder's supply center.
