Well, it happened. :-(( Somewere between 12:30am and 5:00am some punk or punks took a sharp object and punched 6 holes in my pumpkin. Whatever they used had a scalloped shank, and the holes were deep. Thats how I know it wasn't an animal. Thank goodness they didn't hurt Bertha, my #1 pumpkin. I am very upset at this, yet deep inside I knew it could happen. I am staying up tonight to make sure nothing else happens. The holes are not very big around, so Im wondering if it will still grow? What upsets me most is that I expected #2 pumpkin to out do Bertha in size, and it keeps me from entering her in a weigh off, since the holes went all the way through to the inner cavity of the pumpkin. Is there anything I could put on the holes to help? Barbara Mitchell

if the holes are just thin knife blade holes, then scape the skin around them so sap covers holes then put a fan on them they should heal over and still grow with luck. (don't forget a fungicide). my heart goes out to you. that's reason enough for me for murder. ':(

Cover the pumpkin with a few dead punks. Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

The holes are more round than flat. I suspect it was either an icepick or more than likely a screw driver.

Sorry very much. I would fill the holes with pieces of young pumpkins skin and seal them.

i also fear the neighborhood punks. actually today i am setting up my security system i purchased through a friends on line security store. it has a flood light and motion detector that triggers a camara to record for a preset amount of time when activated. the images are black and white (less expensive then color) and recorded on a 10 hour tape in a vcr. should be interesting. i have already posted signs saying "video survelence, you are beeing recorded" eventhough i don't have the sytem up yet. i will let everyone know how it works and post my friends website if anyone else is interested.

Thanks everyone for your replys. I stayed up till early this morning. Fortunatly, all was quiet. I even had the goofy idea of hiring one of the neighborhood teenagers to sit out there to keep watch as my security. The one I was thinking of is a good kid and reliable.(not that his parents would let him) All kinds of weird ideas go through your head when your sitting all alone at 3:00 in the morning in the dark. :-) Barb M.

Luckily, I have an Akita posted just off to the side of our gateway....and a Rottweiler in the house. The Akita will sound the alarm outside and the Rottie sounds it inside. Its a perfect security system!
