the pumpkin vines themselfs take a lot to decompose unless you shred them. myself i perfer to burn them so as to get rid of any pests. and spread the ashes on my garden.

As you say, they go the same way as the leaves of potatos and tomatos to avoid diseases: burn em!

Folks, you notice that the two previous responses were from growers outside the USA. We, in the Pacific Northwest, are strictly forbidden from burning any crops out doors. I plow mine back into the soil......if they are healthy.

I personally would will pay to have them hauled away if I can't work them through the burn barrels. We still have those things here for paper. A little at a time can slip through the cracks.

If plants are not diseased then I till them in with everything else. If they are diseased then the plants should all ready have been removed.

Late season secondary infection from rotting vine and fruit can be an early infection next season. I remove all and bag to the curb. It's bad enough we plant the same area year after year without rotation of the crops. Backyard gardeners have to do what we can to keep it healthy. And unless you got a four year compost area saving it could be worse.

My vines seem to be disease free every year. (knock on wood) After the first frost, I run them over with the lawn mower. By the time spring has come, the patch is ready to go.
