            | shazzy | Joliet, IL | i found a good way to blast a svb larve once insidea vine or leaf stalk. i used a turky baster and
malathion. you can get the baster tip right up tp the
hole nice and blast them fat hungry bastards deep inside
the plant. i blasted 15 holes yesterday and went out an
hour later for dac/malathion spraying and found that 10
holes had dead grubs hanging out of the leaf stalk base
holes and one in a vine hole. the damage is done on
the plants for this year and luckily so far no noticable
borer damage on the main vines in front of the pumpkins.
but for every grub i can still kill this year, means
one less svb adult to emerge next year to lay 300 new
 eggs.

tremor or anyone else, what is the best fall and/or spring
insecticide to till in to the ground to kill svb
 pupae?

 thanks shazzy

            | Charleston | Southeast | You can also inject directly into the vine with a 25g needle and 10cc syringe. I can get these for people if they ever need them. | 8/17/2003 5:06:09 PM |

            | Tremor | [email protected] | Tilling several times during late fall & winter helps increase insect mortality.
Two weeks prior to planting out in the spring, treated the patch to an Imidocloprid containing product @ .3 Lbs active ingredient rate. Merit 75WP, WSP, Admire, & Provado all are applied at 1.6 oz per 11,000 sq ft or 4 Teaspoons per 1,000 sq ft & watered in will do. This may be "reinforced" at or around 90 days later.

Len Stellpflug's informative article in the "how to" section is required reading before treating. He used a different yet effective method that is working well.

Besides SVB, Merit will also control Aphids, Whiteflies, etc.

This will destroy "escapes" from but does not negate the need for good contact sprays containing such ingredients as Llambda-cyhalothrin, Bifenthrin, or at least Carbaryl (Sevin). Some grades of Permethrin work well also.

            | Tremor | [email protected] | I sell them for a living. We have some "factory stores" in IL. You can check our lousy website. The store locator by zip code is the most useful feature anyway.
 www.lesco.com

Though primarily a "Pro-Turf & Ornamental" supplier, we do make & sell such pumpkin items as Chelated Calcium, all sorts of potash fertilizers, & various chemcials.
