Randy (hubby) says while he was out tending the horses the other night, that he heard a noise that sounded like a tire expanding onto a rim. He swears it was one of my pumpkins! Says the noise came from my pumpkin patch. True, one of mine did take a growth spurt that night....but heard it grow???

Its funny you should say that. The other night I took some photos of the pumpkins at night, the flash went off and the photo was taken and then just afterwards the pumpkins seemed to go "pop".
At the time I was lying on my back in the patch at 1am. trying to get a photo of a pumpkin with the moon and mars in the background whilst contemplating what effect this could be having on sap flow.
I thought I must have been hearing things as a result of going completely bonkers and dismissed it.

There is no doubt in my mind that some people may be able to experience this...hearing them grow just as some people can and do find underground water dousing while others can not even believe it possible. The human mind is a powerfull little understood thing. You can do what you firmly believe you can do is not a new philosophy. It is a fact!

My wife swears the 731 Stucker moved/grew as she walked by it last week.
Maybe it's a spouse thing?

one night, my friend was over and my mom, dad, my friend and i were playing a hot game of dirty clubs. dad, being the sore loser that he is, kept banging the table with his fist when he lost or had a bad hand. we found a wonderful time in provoking his anger by exclaiming "did you here that, the pumpkin just gained 2 more pounds!!!" whenever his fist hit the table.

Just go here:
http://www.sagebrush.com/~sells/
and download RecAll. Then put a microphone near to the pumpkin and connect it to your PC. Every time the pumpkin makes a noise due to growth (or whatever...), the noise activation feature will save the sound of your pumpkin to the PC.
By the way, they have other nice progs called WinChime or WaveSong. If RecAll captured a munching critter or a blasting pumpkin, that´s good stuff to calm down a grower;-)

What I actually saw was the movement of some tendrils in the evening, amazing. I hope AG´s will never turn into carnivorous plants...

Has anyone tried playing music in the patch? Doesn't it calm the "beast"? <G>

I heard that if you put a stethescope on the pumpkin(or was it the vine), that you could here gurgling sounds. I have a stethescope and tried it, didn't hear a thing.

I have a radio in the patch but it's not for the pumpkin, it't to keep critters away. Seems to work.

the radio thing defintily works; this one house we landscape / maintain for work is kind of in the woods and the raccoons pull(ed) up the flowers everynight. putting down garlic sort of helped but didnt solve the problem. keeping a radio on did the trick.

I missed out on the sound of mine growing the other day. Now the only sound coming from the patch is the low hum of an electric fan blowing on the 2 cracks in my best pumpkin. But aleast I have electricity!!!

floh...you have the right idea! Only two way radios or a baby monitor should do the trick.
How did the photo turn out AXC? Anything we can see in your diary?

This is bordering on arcane. But I know if I was gaining 20 lbs. a day there'd be some fairly strange noises about the place.

I myself haven't heard any noises from my pumpkins, but I swear to God, if you watch them very closely on one of those big growth days, they twitch and tremble! Anyone else notice this?
