            | PumpkinShepherd (Todd) | Indiana | Anyone know where I might find a powder fungicide to fill stem split? Not sure if any other fungicide will work? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks,
 Todd

            | docgipe | Montoursville, PA | If the damage goes deep I kinda like the idea of running in some liquid fungicide first anyway.
Captan is going off the market.

            | Tremor | [email protected] | All the contact fungicides are being scrutinized one by one. Commercial pesticide applicators are already prohibited from using Daconil on residential properties for any reason whatsoever. Mancozeb is the only contact fungicide left for commercial use on a residential property. We lost Dursban which was the most widely used insecticide on the planet just a few years ago. Diazinon, Orthene & Sevin will all be gone in the next 5-7 years. And with all the goofy stuff the Clinton/Gore team put into motion, we'll lose more soon. Captan's days have been numbered for years now.

            | Autumnloft | Monrovia,CA | Sevin too!?! Are you kidding? I thought that was the safest stuff (that works) on the market. I can use it on my chickens if I want to. Is there alittle paranoia going on here?

            | Brigitte | | Just out of curiosity Steve, how long is the shelf life on some those fungicides/pesticides (say, perhaps, if a crazy person wanted to stock up before it went off the shelves). | 8/14/2003 12:17:37 PM |

            | docgipe | Montoursville, PA | You may find the shelves are already bare! They are in this community, to the best of my knowlege. Captan was a very popular fungicide in the powder form.
I see the loss of Captain as an opportunity. All we need is a powder to thicken any fungicide liquid into the paste we all have used so much. Help Stephen or anyone!

            | Tremor | [email protected] | Brigitte, Captan is a wettable powder & will last in it's orinignal container for many years if not exposed to heat. I cleaned the shelf of all the Bonide Captan 50W in 2 oz jars at a friend of mines garden center last year. I don't use it for foliar sprays since many better fungicides exist for that. Though it seems good for seed treatment & stem cracks so I grabbed it. It's kind of funny. But I had to discount the 5 lb commercial bags to below cost to get them off my own shelves back in '94 when that particular manufacturers registration was not going to be renewed.

Zineb was a good fungicide. I used to use it on trees. Like Mancozeb. It's a contact. Check the following 2 links for more info. The last time I used it the rate boiled down to .25 oz (dry weight of the powder) per gallon of water.

All US retail registrations have been suspened. Had to do with the use of protective clothing that the registrant wanted all applicators to wear (think liability here). The Fed's knew that homeowners & backyard farmers wouldn't be wearing Tyvek Chemical coveralls while spraying. So the consumer registration ended right then & there. But I did find this stuff for sale in Australia:
