            | Stepha | Washington State | Hey there all...went on vacation and had a friend take care of the garden...came home to some powdery white stuff on the leaves??? What is this and how do I treat this???? I don't want to loose any of my 'kins and some are pretty big. I am not up to the world class size this year, but watch out next year!!! So if anyone can tell me what this is and how to treat it with as natural a method as possible that would be GREAT!!
 Anxiously waitin'

            | Kelly Klinker | Woodburn, Indiana | powdery mildew is what it sounds like. you might be able to control it, i'm not postive on that, but i would immediately start spraying with daconil. out. | 8/10/2003 9:05:22 PM |

If it is Powdery Mildew, then the most natural thing I now of that works is 1 Tbsp of Baking Soda plus 2.5 Tbsp of Superior Summer Horticultural Oil in one gallon of water. Watch the temperature. Eighty five is too warm.

Safer Soap & M-Pede (same stuff but for commercial use) is labeled for prevention though I've not used it for control.

I've also read here of Powdered Milk (I think) but not sure about that one.

 Good luck.

            | Stepha | Washington State | Do I just spray these things on the leaves? or water them into the ground? Can I get these things at a nursery or do I have to go someplace special? Thanks so much guys!!!!

            | Tremor | [email protected] | If you choose the Oil + Baking Soda, then yes, the Oil you want must be labeled "Superior", or "6E", or at least "Summer" & these are readily available at nurseries & garden centers. The Baking Soda is probably in one of your kitchen cabinets.
Safer Soap would be another garden center purchase.

I was hoping by now that the Powdered Milk formula would have found this thread. A search of this site might turn it up.

            | Alexsdad | Garden State Pumpkins | Yikes! Looks like from all the posts that powdery mildew and vacations go hand in hand...I daconiled and scimitar before I left...but I guess all the rain washed it off I'm covered from the tarps out...any leaf that folds under another is covered...another dose of daconil but can I apply this stuff daily seems like it rains everytime I put it on? and it doesn't appear any better. | 8/12/2003 7:13:05 AM |

            | Tremor | [email protected] | Chuck,
We went the week of July 19th. Sprayed the house patch with Eagle (systemic) + Mancozeb (contact) + Talstar (better than Scimitar) & came home to a clean patch. Stephen's school had Powdery Mildew. But we can't really spray there.

Get a systemic in the mix with that Daconil or you won't likely get it under control.
