            | Bantam | Tipp City, Ohio | Wanting to get a plant tissue test done. I believe with all of the leaves I piled on this year, after recieving my soil test, I tied up all of the Nitrogen into breaking down the leaves. Plants seem to be maturing too quickly (yellowing of leaves)and some fruits are slowing in size. Or a possible Molybdenum deficiency.
What labs have you used and did you get satisfactory results?

 Thanks....Tom

            | Alexsdad | Garden State Pumpkins | Hey Tom, I've experienced the same thing growing in leaves this year. Plants located entirely in leaves with no clay seem to age much faster. The ones that are low down where the water runs off to are okay...probably from the fert run off...ones that have a clay mix are doing the best. Tissue tests are expensive maybe a mid season soil test will point out the problem...or a kelp treatment might help...My leaves are mostly Oak and I was thinking it may be the phenols in them from a previous post I read...Weeds just won't grow in them...just starting to get weed growth in a patch that should be covered with em. At some point of the leaf decomposition it will have to release all that nitrogen so knowing the available nitrogen will be important. Good luck Chuck | 8/10/2003 9:09:38 AM |

            | LIpumpkin | Long Island,New York | Hey Chuckles....weed growth...since you had all those leaves trucked in your weeds will either be seeds found in the leaves, tree seedlings, or wind blown seeds after the leaf deposition. What kind of weeds do you have..? it would be a good indicator of where the seeds came from. Was there alotta grass clippings in the leaf loads? Alotta weeds get pulled while doing fall cleanup and go in the back of the truck etc...if you keep your leaf loads to just leaves there will be hardly any weeds...not to mention the mulching aspect of 6 foot of leaves !..lol....oh to bw weed free !!....G | 8/10/2003 9:32:20 AM |

            | Alexsdad | Garden State Pumpkins | Yeah G that could be ...the top layer of leaves is like a mulch that dries out pretty quickly maybe that has stopped them but with all this rain lately looks like crab grass and some form of chickweed is starting to pop in...still not a lot though..just glad to see something will germinate in it...wow next year I'll be cursing it out I'm sure. | 8/10/2003 10:41:28 AM |

            | overtherainbow | Oz | get lots of red wigglers(vance saffels,englewood,tennesee) and put in a high nitrogen cover crop.maybe a smidgen of salts,,,epsom...tipp city soil is black if i remember right..sure beats s.e,tennessee clay | 8/10/2003 4:40:57 PM |
