            | Phil H. | Cameron, ontario Team Lunatic | I have had problems deciding what to do. I have a pumpkin on a secondary vine that is about 85" cir. but is starting to growing on top of itself, has a funny shape and has slowed down.I have one on the main that is only 55", but growing well. The problem is that all other pumpkins on the main have split and I don't want to have a plant without a pumpkin on it. Should I cull the one on the secondary or leave them both on the vine. I have 2 other plants doing fine. I appeciate any thoughts on the topic. LOL Phil from Cameron | 8/7/2003 2:41:40 PM |

            | Desert Storm | New Brunswick | Oh dear...I haven't had any split but I do share your problem. I am in the same boat. To cull or not to cull...that is the question. Sure hope someone can help us. | 8/7/2003 4:46:02 PM |

            | Cowpie | Ontario | Hi Phil from Cameron. Can we call you PFC for short? I think a bigger question you should be asking yourself is, Why are those pumpkins splitting on you? Are they genetically predisposed to splitting? Have they a track record for splitting? Maybe you need a calcium suppliment. The usual reason is from over fertilizing. Are you guilty? Hey, we all have done that. Personally I'd go with the pumpkin on the main vine and deal with the splitting problem. BTW I take no blame if it blows up in your face as it were ;0)

            | General | Erin,Ontario. | Hey Phil. How far out is the one on the main? How many days are each of them at?I agree with Cowpie about the feeding. At any rate one of 'em needs to go in my opinion!Good luck!! | 8/7/2003 10:49:31 PM |

            | Phil H. | Cameron, ontario Team Lunatic | Thanks for your replies. I don't think I have been over fertilizing, only fert. once since poll. (12,0,44). I couldn't take it anymore so I cut off the bigger side pumpkin and kept the one on the main. The pumpkin on the main is about 16' out. I'm wondering about the calcium levels and if it is possible to add some now. Is there any type of calcium that I can add to the patch now or will I have to wait till spring? Thanks again Phil from Cameron.(PFC) | 8/8/2003 8:09:37 AM |
