            | Cowpie | Ontario | Like every other grower we all can only really hope for a personal best every year. As for long term goals I would love to accomplish 3 goals. (1)Grow a thousand pound pumpkin. (2) Have someone use one of my seeds to grow a thousand pound pumpkin (3) Grow a thousand pound pumpkin with my own seed. Lofty goals indeed but you gotta dream right? I doesn't look like I'll be accomplishing any of these three goals this year (RATS) but it got me wondering who actually has done these three things so I looked things up on the AGGC and came up with the following info.
 # of growers that have grown legally weighed 1000 pound or better pumpkins...........48 (some have done it more than once)

 # of growers from these people that had pumpkins over 1000 pounds grown from their seeds by other people........12

 # of 1000 pound growers that used their own seed to grow a thousand pound pumpkin..........................10

 # of growers that have accomplished all 3 feats....... 6

The best of the best. Dave Stelts, Joe Pukos, Bill Bobier Joel Holland, Jim Kuhn and Steve Handy.

You know if someone asked me to come up with people that have done all three things off the top of my head, I would have come up with Fred Calai for sure but believe it or not he's never used his own seed to hit 1000 pounds (odd). 10 other people have used his seeds. Great grower though.

BTW I realize that I may have missed a few pumpkins here or there but I do think it's only these 6 that have turned the hat-trick.

            | peepers | Tacoma, WA | A very select group indeed!! You'll note that they all have been growing for a l-o-n-g time. Thanks for the research, cowpie.

            | Phil H. | Cameron, ontario Team Lunatic | Does Al Eaton of the Ottawa area, fit into that group? just wondering. Phil from Cameron, Ontario. | 8/1/2003 6:40:24 AM |

            | Don Quijot | Caceres, mid west of Spain | Hey Cowpie, a research like this one you made is a great thing to be done... in winter! How can you find time now to do it, with all the weeds, runners, bugs... that are hidden in the patch, waiting you to dissapear to get out and grow bigger than the pumpkins???Anyway, nice information, and if you still having time enough, it would be nice that you could update it till 900 lbs growers.

            | Cowpie | Ontario | No Phil, Al Eaton has not done all three things as of yet. In fact no Canadian has. It's just a matter of time really though. Al's 1236 seed from last year looks to be a killer seed and I'm sure that it is more than capable of getting to 1000lbs. by Al and hopefully with a few people he shared his seed with. I really don't think that any of the big hitters are striving to hit all three goals anyway. Their aim is to bring in the heaviest pumpkin they can and that's all that is important to most growers. It was just a personal goal and observation thing for me that I thought others would be interested in. As for having the time to compile research.....Well I have the week off from work and it only took about an hour so my patch didn't suffer too much , but the weeds are looking pretty nice . Thanks for asking ;0) | 8/1/2003 8:59:55 AM |

            | wk | ontario | Phil if you have the week off come over and visit the patch I am home this Friday..I have seen yours and would be glad to show you what I have at this time.....maybe we can compare notes on the 1236....oh yes that 1236 is going to be a killer seed.......wayne | 8/1/2003 9:21:27 AM |

            | docgipe | Montoursville, PA | Hey we need another sixty days under our belt but I have to say the 1061.5 and 1097.8 TC are looking pretty good in my patch. Other reports are similar. Tony plans to grow his 1097.8 next year. Believe he could do it even if I fail the magic mark. Great study! This study should be reviewed possibly editied for oversights and moved to a location elsewhere within this site. I will suggest this to John and Ken. | 8/1/2003 1:10:49 PM |

            | Phil H. | Cameron, ontario Team Lunatic | 934- Wayne, I' m not sure who and where you are but I would love to see your garden and if its not too far , next fri. would be fine. It would be nice to have someone close to compare ideas and results. Looking forward to our meeting, Phil. | 8/2/2003 7:36:01 AM |
